If we analyze perception, there are three types. Among them, the perception of the desire realm is called subtle, because it takes the five desirable qualities such as form as its object, and it is inferior compared to other realms. The perception of the form realm is called vast, because it is superior to the perception of the desire realm, and it takes the object of meditative concentration as its object. The perception of the formless realm is called immeasurable, because it takes the immeasurable aspects such as 'space is infinite' as its object. Alternatively, some teachers say that perception that takes mustard seeds etc. as its object is called subtle. Perception that takes Mount Sumeru etc. as its object is called vast. Perception that takes space etc. as its object is explained as immeasurable. The explanation of the aggregate of perception is complete. After the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formations is mentioned, therefore it is time to explain it. The question is asked: What are the formations? This is asking for the name, meaning, and nature of the aggregate of formations. Among them, because causes and conditions gather and produce, it is called formation. It is said: In the previous sections on form and feeling etc., the question was "What is form? What is feeling?", but not "What are forms? What are feelings?". But here, when explaining the aggregate of formations, why is the question not "What is formation?" but "What are formations?". It is said: Because when explaining the aggregates of form and feeling, many dharmas are not shown and explained as when explaining the aggregate of formations, therefore the question is asked "What are formations?". The answer is given, stating "Those mental events other than feeling and perception, and those that are not associated with mind." The word "other" means "leaving aside" or "excluding." In short, leaving aside or excluding feeling and perception, whatever mental events arise from the mind and whatever dharmas are not associated with the mind are called the aggregate of formations. The question is asked: What is the purpose of stating the phrase "other than feeling and perception"?

Answer: The characteristics of those two have already been explained above. There is no need to explain them here now, so the word "other" is mentioned, meaning that those two are not explained here. Question: The characteristics of those two have already been explained as mentioned above. If there is no doubt here, is it not permissible to not mention them at all? Answer: Those two also belong to mental factors, and in order to show that they are mental factors belonging to the aggregate of formation, it is not permissible to mention their names here. Question: Among the fifty-one mental factors, the others are grouped into one aggregate called the aggregate of formation, so why are feeling and perception separated separately? Why are they explained as individual aggregates? Answer: Feeling is the nature of experiencing, and it experiences the ripening of virtue and non-virtue, and experiences happiness and suffering, so it is separated and explained as an aggregate separately. Perception is the object of applying names, and worldly people apply names by grasping the characteristics of the meanings of seeing, hearing, and knowing of perception, saying "I see, I hear, I know," so it is separated separately and explained as individual aggregates. Moreover, feeling and perception are the root of disputes and the cause of samsara. Other mental factors also further increase the cause of afflictions, so even though they are mental factors, they are explained separately as individual aggregates. There are two roots of disputes: attachment to desire and attachment to views. There are also two aspects of disputes: the aspect of householders and the aspect of renunciates. Among them, the aspect of householders disputes because of attachment to desire. The sutra also says that householders dispute with householders because of attachment to desire, being bound and attached to it. Thus, the root of disputes for householders is feeling. Renunciates dispute because of universal attachment to views. The sutra also says that renunciates dispute with renunciates because of universal attachment and bondage to views, and universal attachment.
