If the ear consciousness does not arise, then that which does not arise is to be understood as the nature of the form and purity of the ear faculty. Similarly, the nose faculty is inside the joints of the nose. The tongue faculty is in the center of the tongue, except for a tip as small as a hair. Others say it is like a crescent moon. The body faculty is all-pervasive. If that is the case, wherever there is a tongue faculty, is there also a body faculty? Which has the stronger object? If they are equal, the tongue faculty grasps the object first, because wanting to eat, the continuum of aggregates is immersed in wanting to eat. The faculties have been explained. Now the five objects are to be discussed, saying: What is form? It is the object of the eye, the recognition of color, shape, and form. Here, the root with an object shows the object through the root, whatever is the meaning of the sphere of activity of the eye faculty, that is the term called form. Among them, there are four kinds of colors: blue, yellow, red, and white. Their distinctions are as follows: shadow, sun, light, darkness, cloud, smoke, dust, gap, and sky. There are eight kinds of shapes: flat, round, high, low, even, uneven, long, and short. Flat is square. Completely circular is round. Mountains and so on are high. Wells and so on are low. Equal in shape is even. Unequal in shape is uneven. Long and short are relative. If it is different because of relativity, so it cannot be fully established? It is okay to be different because of relativity, just like father and son. For example, relative to the father, the son will never become the father. Relative to the son, the father will never become the son, just as relative to what is long, relative to that, it will never become short. Relative to what is short, relative to that, it will never become long, long and short are reasonable. Form has been explained. Now sound is to be discussed, saying: What is sound? It is the object of the ear, having apprehension, non-apprehension, and both, it arises from the cause of the four great elements. What does it mean to have apprehension?

What is it? Mind and mental events grasp the object of support, that is, the two of benefit and harm follow each other, so in the world, whatever has mind is called "grasping." Like this, the sound produced by the grasping great elements is called produced from the cause of the grasping elements, that is, the sound of hands and language. What is produced from the cause of the non-grasping great elements is the sound of wind and forest, etc. The sound of both is produced from the cause of the great elements, that is, the sound of hands and drums, etc. This again changes into four kinds according to the difference of explanation, that is, worldly fame, completely imputed, established by accomplishment, and nominal designation. Worldly fame is the speech of worldly people, such as vase, pot, and vehicle, etc. Completely imputed is the speech of non-Buddhists, such as "the chief is the maker," etc. Established by accomplishment is what is taught by the noble ones, such as "all conditioned phenomena are impermanent," etc. Nominal designation is of noble ones and non-noble ones, and it should be understood that it is established by the power of nominal designations such as visible and invisible. From the established tenets, there is the saying "the object of the ear is the form produced by the four great elements." The explanation of sound is finished. What is smell? It is the object of the nose, that is, fragrance, stench, and other smells. Fragrance is whatever, when smelled, increases the continuum of the aggregates. Stench is whatever, when smelled, diminishes the continuum of the aggregates. Equal smell is whatever, when smelled, does not change either of the two. These are also divided into co-born, combined, and transformed. The explanation of smell is finished. What is taste? It is the object of the tongue, that is, sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, and astringent. It is called taste because it is to be tasted, and it is synonymous with the word "tasting taste." Among them, sweet is brown sugar, rock candy, etc. Sour is vinegar and sour fruit, etc. Salty is the five salts. Spicy is the three spices. Bitter is Trichosanthes leaves, etc. Astringent is the bark of the wood jambu tree, etc. These are also divided into pleasant and unpleasant.
