I speak of the nature of the aggregate of formation. The aggregate of consciousness speaks of the nature of designation. The aggregate of formation speaks of the nature of the manifest formation of dharma and non-dharma. The aggregate of consciousness speaks of the nature of their abode. Thus, in the world, most people grasp consciousness as self, and the rest as belonging to self. Therefore, the five aggregates themselves are reasonable. If one accepts a self with such a nature, how can it be reasonable that the Samkhyas speak of permanence, indivisibility, non-agency, profundity, and so on; the Vaisheshikas speak of agency and consumption, and so on; and the naked ascetics speak of shrinking and expanding like a lamp in a pot? According to the view of those who speak in this way, the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions would not exist. Why? Because the self is permanent. If it is said that virtuous and non-virtuous actions benefit or harm the self, then neither benefit nor harm will occur to the self, because it is permanent like space. Just as there is no benefit or harm to space, which is permanent and unchanging, so too the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions are meaningless here for the self. Again, it is said: What is the use of the two appearances in the sky? The fruit of the two is on the skin. If it is impermanent like skin, if it is like space, there is no fruit. Or what is the use of examining the teeth of a crow? One should enter into the main subject. Therefore, it is said that the five aggregates are treatises on Abhidharma. First, by showing the aggregate of form, it is devoted solely to showing its characteristics. To this it is said: What is form? Whatever is form, all of that is the four great elements and what is made of the four great elements. This is a brief summary of the aggregate of form. What is the meaning of the term "four great elements"? What is there to doubt? Because the word "arising" has many meanings. For example, the word "arising" also has the meaning of birth, just as food is produced in order to sustain sentient beings.

It is manifested as birth. It also exists in truth, that is, the so-called speaking truthfully. It also exists in existence, that is, stating one's own condition as it is. It also exists in sentient beings, that is, the so-called abandoning the defilements of all beings. It also exists in the deceased, that is, the so-called past events. It also exists in non-humans, that is, the so-called "If there are any spirits who come here," and similarly, "possessed by spirits," "the decline of spirits." It also exists in slight incompleteness, that is, the so-called like a father. What does the word "birth" refer to here? One should look at earth and so on, that is, the four great elements. What are the four? They are the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element. Birth, truth, and existence, sentient beings, deceased, and non-humans, slightly incomplete, body, and earth and so on, the wise should understand the word "birth" in this way. They are both "birth" and "great," therefore they are the "four great elements." They are great because they are the basis of other forms that arise from them. Or, the aggregates of earth, water, fire, and wind depend on the majority of them, and when gathering, maturing, and moving, they exist as the great earth of karma. Or, they merely appear to exist as the great earth. Water, fire, and wind are clear that they exist in great places during the three great eons. Thus, during the fire eon, it burns up to the first dhyana. During the water eon, it drifts up to the second dhyana. During the wind eon, it destroys up to the third dhyana. What is the meaning of "birth"? In order to accomplish various kinds of birth, they appear in various ways, therefore they are "birth." Or, because it is birth, it is birth, because it makes birth exist, it is pure birth, it makes the existence of birth vast. This is its definition. What is the meaning of "element"? Because it holds its own characteristics and the form that arises from it, it is an element. So, what is the earth element? The so-called hardness, that is, the hard thing that exists in the body, is the earth element. What is the water element? The so-called wetness, that is, what makes the body wet.
