Explanation of the Five Aggregates Guṇaprabha Explanation of the Five Aggregates Guṇaprabha In Sanskrit: Pañca Skandha Vibāraṇa. In Tibetan: Explanation of the Five Aggregates. Volume One. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! This, called the Five Aggregates, is a treatise on Abhidharma. In this treatise, we should first explain the connection, the purpose, and the praise to one's own teacher. The praise is as mentioned in the Treasury of Knowledge and other treatises, which should be consulted here. Therefore, the teacher did not make a praise here with that intention. The connection of this is that the Blessed One spoke of the Abhidharma in a hundred thousand sections, etc., but beings cannot understand it. Therefore, how can beings comprehend the Abhidharma with a concise treatise? This is the connection. The purpose of this is to completely distinguish the dharmas. Here, dharma refers to the five aggregates with and without defilements. Distinguishing these individual characteristics and general characteristics is complete distinction, combined with the noble path. Why is that? Because without completely distinguishing the dharmas, there is no means to pacify the afflictions. Thus it is said. The Blessed One also said, "If one does not directly know and completely know one dharma, I do not say that suffering will be completely exhausted." Not directly knowing means not directly knowing with the path of seeing. Not completely knowing means not completely knowing with the path of meditation. Therefore, this purpose is reasonable. In short, Abhidharma can be briefly summarized into two aspects: conventional truth and ultimate truth. Ultimate truth refers to the five uncontaminated aggregates: the aggregate of discipline, the aggregate of concentration, the aggregate of wisdom, the aggregate of liberation, and the aggregate of the wisdom of liberation and vision. Conventional truth refers to that which is associated with wisdom, such as the wisdom arising from hearing, the wisdom arising from thinking, the wisdom arising from meditation, innate wisdom, and treatises. Thus, this is an extensive explanation.
