All beings will also attain Nirvana. Thus it is said. The reason is: Thus, after arising from the cessation attainment and the non-perception attainment and the non-perception, the entering consciousness called the appearing consciousness arises, and it depends on the objective condition. The so-called "thus" is a synonym for "for what reason." When entering the cessation attainment, the six entering consciousnesses cease. Similarly, when entering the non-perception attainment, and after arising from the non-perception, the entering consciousness called the appearing consciousness arises again, combined with the situation of "for what reason," its cause is the habit residing in the Alaya consciousness. The so-called "depending on the objective condition," the objective is the six objects, namely form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma. If the Alaya consciousness is denied, from what cause will the six entering consciousnesses arise? Therefore, the Alaya consciousness should be acknowledged. "Entering with different aspects" refers to when the eye consciousness and others produce blue and other aspects, from where do they arise, that is the Alaya consciousness. "Ceasing and then arising again" refers to when the entering consciousness is interrupted during sleep, fainting, and other times, from where will it arise, that is the Alaya consciousness. "For the entering and exiting of samsara" refers to samsara being the five aggregates of close grasping, their entering and exiting are the real objects of coming and going. The difference in the cause of such a self-nature body is called the Alaya consciousness. The Alaya consciousness is the basis of all seeds, and the Alaya and cause of the body, this is because the seeds of all defiled dharmas reside in it, therefore it is called the Alaya consciousness. Or, it resides in them as the real object of cause. The so-called "because it resides in the body" means that the consciousness resides in the body.

Therefore, it is called the ālaya-vijñāna. The grasping consciousness is also it, because it is called the grasping of the body, which means that the ālaya-vijñāna itself is the grasping consciousness. As it says in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: "The grasping consciousness is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river. It is not permissible to conceive of it as self. I have not shown this to children." It is like that. Therefore, it is called the grasping consciousness, because it grasps all the colored sense faculties, it is the place for grasping all bodies, and it grasps the body. For example, if it seizes the colored sense faculties, it will remain alive until the end of life without dying. When connecting the continuum, it also manifests, and the grasping consciousness seizes the body. Therefore, it is said that it is because of grasping the body. In reality, the mind focuses on the ālaya-vijñāna, which is to say, it focuses on the ālaya-vijñāna and clings to it as self. It is the nature of constant arrogance, and is the same as constantly being deluded about self, viewing self, being arrogant about self, measuring self, and so on. Therefore, it is said to be all-pervasive, and it also occurs in virtue, non-virtue, and the unspecified. Consciousness, that is to say, of the same kind, is a synonym for the nature of affliction. Continuously arising is a synonym for momentary. It is all-pervasive, however, except for the time of an arhat and the noble path, and the time of cessation. At the time of the noble path and the time of cessation, it generates habits and then ceases. Having arisen, it then arises again from that seed. At the time of an arhat, it is completely extinguished. Thus, the six entering consciousnesses, the ālaya-vijñāna, the afflicted mind, and the eight consciousnesses, these are what are said to be the skandha of consciousness. The skandha of consciousness has been explained. Why is it called a skandha? What is to be said is, the answer is: because it is an accumulation. Because it is an accumulation, how is it so?

If one wants to know, what is said here about form, etc., which are different in time, continuum, form, realm of activity, and place, is because it is merely abbreviated. It should be understood as the meaning of accumulation. What is called form, etc., that are different in time, should be similarly applied separately. By mentioning "etc.," it should be understood to include feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Among them, past form is past time, because cause and effect have already been experienced. Present form is present time, because the cause has been experienced but the effect has not yet been experienced. Future form is future time, because cause and effect have not yet been experienced. What is called continuum is the individual continuum, and it should be understood to include form, etc. What is called form should be understood as forms such as blue and yellow. What is called realm of activity is the five realms of activity, namely the realms of sentient beings in hell, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, and gods. The realm of asuras is not mentioned separately because it is included in the realms of gods and hungry ghosts. These realms of activity, whatever forms, etc., exist in them, should be understood as being different because of the different realms of activity. Form, etc., that are different in place should be understood as being different because of places such as the western Godaniya. Thus, because the various forms, etc., are abbreviated, they are called aggregates of form, etc. Why is the meaning of aggregate spoken of in that way? Because it can be seen in the world, for example, anything that is not round is called an aggregate, like a heap of grain. The aggregates, etc., are shown to be nominally existent. The twelve sources are from the eye source to the dharma source. What is said about the eye, etc., is explained as before, meaning that the five faculties, such as the eye, etc., mentioned in the aggregate of form, should be regarded as the sources of the eye, etc. Similarly, the five objects mentioned in the aggregate of form should be regarded as the five sources from the form source to the touch source.
