Because there is no antidote. That is, one should observe that the aggregates never arise. Why? Because the objects of the five consciousnesses are like that, they cannot focus on past objects. What is analytical cessation? Whatever is ceased is separation, that is, the aggregates never arise by the antidote to afflictions. The so-called analytical discernment is the wisdom achieved through effort, which can separately contemplate the four truths. Or, separately and correctly understanding one's own truth is analytical discernment, which is a synonym for realization. The cessation obtained thereby is cessation through analytical discernment. Or, knowing itself is analytical discernment, which is a distinction of wisdom. It should be obtained thereby, the word obtained is because it is not expressed clearly. For example, just as a vehicle with an ox is called an ox cart, because the word "having" is not expressed clearly. This is separation from the contaminated dharmas, therefore, it is said that it does not arise by the antidote to afflictions. If liberation is attained, afflictions will never arise, because they will surely be eliminated. This is called analytical cessation. What is suchness? It is the suchness of all dharmas and the selflessness of dharmas. Because it is not other, it is suchness. Dharmas refer to form and so on. Suchness refers to their own nature. How can the selflessness of dharmas become self-nature? For example, if one analyzes dharmas such as wool, there will be no self-nature. Just as wool does not establish the self-nature of wool, the cause of thread does not establish the self-nature of the cause of thread. Why? Because it is the nature of parts. The parts also do not establish the nature of the parts. Why? Because it is the nature of minute parts. Minute parts and so on should also be understood in the same way. In this way, one observes that all dharmas have no self-nature. Why is it called the source of birth? Because it is the door through which consciousness arises, that is why there are twelve.

Having similarities with those, it serves as the gateway for the arising of the six entering consciousnesses, hence it is called "source of arising." In terms of its definitive meaning, what is called mind and mental factors is the cause of the growth of arising, therefore it is a "source of arising." Growth means expansion, which is synonymous with expanding. The sources of arising have been explained. The eighteen elements, which are to be discussed, have been mentioned. The element of the eye and so forth arise extensively. The elements of the eye and so forth, and the sources of arising of forms and so forth, are just as they are. This means that whatever the five sources of arising of the eye and so forth, and whatever objects such as forms, those that are shown as sources of arising, should be regarded as the elements of the eye and so forth, and the elements of forms and so forth. By mentioning "and so forth," it includes the ear, nose, tongue, and body. For objects, it also includes the sources of arising of sound, smell, taste, and tactile sensations. These six elements of consciousness rely on the eye and so forth, and cognize objects such as forms. This means that the elements of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are the basis for the six elements of consciousness of the eye and so forth. The six external elements, namely form, sound, smell, taste, tactile sensation, and phenomena, will be shown as objects. That is to say, the six elements of consciousness arise from the two sets of six. Having mentioned the element of mind, someone might ask, is there another element of mind separate from the six entering consciousnesses? The answer is, there is nothing else. It is just those that have just ceased, becoming the cause of the six entering consciousnesses, giving rise to other consciousnesses, which is called the element of mind. Otherwise, if one is contained within another, it would become seventeen or twelve elements. If the basis of the five consciousnesses such as eye consciousness is the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, then upon what does the sixth consciousness rely to arise, since there is no place at all? Therefore, in order to show the basis of the sixth consciousness and the element
