Therefore, what is manifestly possible is any aspect that is separate from the knowable that obstructs it from other things. The sky is what appears blue above. Shape is not long, short, flat, round, high, low, even, or uneven. What is this called "shape"? Haven't long, etc., been mentioned? If it is said that it is not understood, then that on which the thought of long, etc., arises is the shape of long, etc. If that is the case, then shape would be separate from color, etc. Why? Because, like this, many aggregates of color, etc., existing in one direction give rise to the thought of long; for small, the thought of short arises; for the same in four directions, the thought of flat arises; for the same in all directions, the thought of round arises; for the majority in the middle, the thought of high arises; for few, the thought of low arises; for one side of the surface, the thought of even arises; for different sides of the surface, the thought of uneven arises. It is only on the aggregate of color, etc., that the thought of long, etc., arises, but shape has not become another meaning, how is that known? Because the thought of long, etc., also arises through touch. It is not possible to know the object of another sense through another sense, otherwise, many senses would become meaningless. That is not sensory consciousness, but inferential consciousness, like knowing the color of a flower from its scent. As scent is certain for the color of a flower, touch is not so for shape; this assumption is inconsistent. Therefore, just as knowledge enters into the shape of long, etc., through the two senses, like a pot, etc., therefore it is not a different thing from color, etc. Since atoms have no parts, it is also unreasonable for them to be internally different in the nature of long, etc. Therefore, just as atoms of blue, etc., are, atoms of long, etc., do not exist. Therefore, it is also not possible to know the shape of long, etc., from the aggregation of shape atoms, because there are no shape atoms.

Thus it is. Form is not a single substance, because it has parts of the near side, the middle, and the far side. These are not without difference, because they have simultaneous manifestation, non-manifestation, and related differences, so these will undoubtedly become different. If they are not different, then those related to them will also become without difference in direction. Therefore, form does not exist as a substance, but rather attaches length and so forth to things that exist in that way, such as color. So, what is this dharma called "representation"? It is the form of the body that arises from the mind that focuses on it, arising in dependence on the great elements of the body, because it makes manifest the mind that fully arises from itself, it is called representation. Here, whatever arises from the mind that focuses on it is representation, but not from focusing on others. Thus, the form of the speaking lips and so forth is not produced by the mind that focuses on it, and it is also prevented from being produced by aspiration. Because that is also produced by the mind of aspiration and the mind of other ripening causes,

It is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous in its essence. However, since it is produced by virtuous and non-virtuous minds, it is imputed as a cause onto the result, and thus designated as virtuous and non-virtuous. Here, the establishment of form is established by way of its nature, location, and the characteristic of its function. The nature is the four colors, such as blue, because that is its nature. The location is the eight shapes, such as long, because it abides in color in that way. The characteristic of function is representation, because it is the nature of bodily movement. What exists substantially is the object of the eye and so forth. If it is thought that shape and representation are not objects of the eye because they are imputed, then how is form said to be the object of the eye? Here, in order to accord with the world, color with the distinction of shape is accepted as the object of the eye. Thus, the eye apprehends color that has the distinction of shape, but not just a single color without shape. Because the eye consciousness that appears as color, which is formed by the distinction of shapes such as long, arises. Therefore, it is said in the world that color and shape are the objects of the eye. Similarly, representation is also said to be the object of the eye because it holds the continuum of the body, being distinct by arising in other places. However, in the ultimate sense, color, like shape, is not the object of the eye, because, like shape, it is not composed of atoms, and because it is not the object of external consciousness. Thus, it should be known that the teacher here is in accordance with the expressions of the world and the scriptures. Because sound is taught after form, it is reasonable to teach sound immediately after teaching that. When asked, "What is sound?" the answer is: It is the object of the ear. It is the object of the ear itself, not the object of other senses. Thus, although there is no difference in that form is made the cause, that distinction is shown from the objects of other senses, such as form. By the statement "The object of the ear is sound itself," it also shows the distinctions of sounds, which are different from each other, but there is no difference in the source of the sounds.
