Although not wise, like form, space does not go from that direction, so it should not be called opening. Obstructed form is an obstacle to the arising of other forms in its own direction, but space is not. Therefore, where there is something, there is no opening; where there is nothing, there is opening, so that thing goes from that place and opens, not space. Therefore, space is not a great element like earth and so on. The so-called four great elements as cause refers to the form of the four great elements and the form caused by the four great elements, both of which can be connected. The five kinds of causal objects of generation, dependence, dwelling, showing, and increase are taken as arising from the great elements by the elements. The word 'caused by cause' means the meaning of cause, for example, if it is said that fire arises from wood as cause, then it is known that it arises from that cause. Among them, the cause of generation is because without them, it does not arise. The cause of dependence is that if the great element changes, then the form that depends on it as cause also changes accordingly. The cause of dwelling is that the great elements arise constantly, so the arising of the great elements is also constant and uninterrupted. The cause of reliance is that it is constant and uninterrupted because of its power. The cause of increase is that if the great element increases, then the form that depends on it as cause also increases. When explaining the earth element and so on, because it holds its own characteristics and the form caused by the cause, earth and so on are the element itself. Saying earth and so on is to distinguish it from each other and from the eye element and so on. Saying element is to make a distinction from the earth and so on of the world. Earth and so on are divided into two kinds of differences that are famous in the world and in the scriptures. Among them, the worldly one is not an element because it is universally designated as the nature of color and shape. Those that come from the scriptures are truly elements because they have the nature of hardness and so on. Like the great elements, the earth

Because the self-nature of earth and so on has not been explained, it is not understood, so the question is asked, what is the earth element, etc.? The answer is: "Hardness itself." Here, "itself" means that hardness is only hardness itself, and there is no other meaning. Hardness, roughness, and viscosity belong to synonyms. What is the water element? The answer is: "Wetness itself." Wetness is the nature of gathering and can moisten. The fire element is hot because it can burn. The wind element is lightness and movement itself. If it is said that lightness is the wind element, then for the form produced by cause, there will be the fault of being only light. If it is said that the wind element is movement, then it becomes merely indicating its function, not its self-nature. Therefore, in order to distinguish lightness, the form produced by cause, and function, it is said that the wind element is lightness and movement. Movement is the cause that makes things continue to arise in other places. If it is said that the earth, water, fire, and wind elements and the form produced by cause are incompatible with each other, then what can prove it? Function can prove it. Therefore, their functions are said to be support, gathering, ripening, and movement. Even if their self-nature cannot be directly observed, how can it be inferred from the function that they exist in stones and other things? For example, in stones and other things there is gathering, drying, and movement, from which it can be clearly seen that water, fire, and wind exist together with the earth element. Similarly, from the phenomena of trees growing, lotuses blooming, and water flowing, it can be clearly seen that earth, fire, and wind run together with the water element. In fire, flames rise, gather, and move, from which it can be clearly seen that earth, water, and wind exist together with fire. In the wind, there is the function of rising, not dispersing, and drying clothes, etc., from which it can be clearly seen that earth, water, and fire exist together with the wind element. What is the difference between function and self-nature? Function is distinguished depending on what is done. For example, for the substance that needs to be supported, depending on the support, the function of the earth element is called support. For things that need to be gathered, depending on the water
