A Detailed Explanation of the Five Aggregates Lodrö Tänpa (Intelligence Steadfast) A Detailed Explanation of the Five Aggregates Intelligence Steadfast In Indian language: Panca Skandha Prakarana Vibhashyam. In Tibetan: A Detailed Explanation of the Five Aggregates. Volume One. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Why is the explanation of the five aggregates and so forth composed? In order to realize the individual and general characteristics of all phenomena. Even if the characteristics of phenomena have already been examined in treatises such as the Yogacarabhumi, does that examination not become meaningless? It does not become meaningless, because mentioning the beginning is for the purpose of taming beings. Mentioning the beginning means that one is pleased with the concise explanation because one is able to completely comprehend all the distinctions of realizing it through just one aspect. It is not the same with the extensive explanation. Therefore, this explanation is composed in order to benefit beings who desire brevity. Or, because those who dwell in households are engaged in many activities, it is impossible to be truly diligent with those that have a large number of chapters, and also those who are truly diligent in focusing on what has arisen, if they are diligent in what has a large number of chapters, they will become distracted. Therefore, in order for those two to realize the characteristics of phenomena, the characteristics of phenomena are explained concisely in this explanation. In that way, composing it will not become meaningless. Or, having realized the concise characteristics of phenomena, one will also be able to realize the extensive characteristics of phenomena without needing to strive. Therefore, the teacher composed this explanation as a cause for entering into those that have a large number of chapters, such as the Yogacarabhumi. If one does not realize the characteristics of phenomena, what will not be accomplished? How is it that the teacher respectfully makes the characteristics of phenomena known? In order to be skilled in focusing the mind one-pointedly, engaging in certain debate, and answering questions and prophecies. Thus, if one becomes proficient in the characteristics of phenomena, one will be without doubt, and therefore one will become one-pointedly focused on the object as desired, but otherwise not.

Through thorough discernment of sectarian characteristics, wisdom can also reach its peak, thereby attaining fearlessness. Having attained fearlessness, one can prophesy all definite eloquent words that are asked, but not otherwise. The so-called five aggregates are taken as a definite number to negate too many or too few. When the word "aggregate" is mentioned without distinction, one should understand it as aggregates with outflows and aggregates without outflows. There are only five aggregates, which is to clearly show the basis for clinging to self and what belongs to self. Neither more nor less, because children mostly cling to consciousness itself as self, and cling to form and other subsequent things as what belongs to self. For example, they think that outer and inner forms are the agent and what is to be done, related to self, thus clinging to the form aggregate as what belongs to self. They think that I truly experience the ripening result of good and bad deeds, thus clinging to the feeling aggregate as what belongs to self. Among them, experiencing pleasure is the ripening result of good deeds, suffering is of bad deeds, and neither suffering nor pleasure is of both. Here, the feeling of equanimity, in which the alaya consciousness exists equally, is itself the ripening result of karma, because the alaya consciousness itself is the ripening result of good and bad deeds. Pleasure and suffering both arise from the ripening result, therefore they are considered as the ripening result. They think that by clinging to the objects of seeing, hearing, distinguishing, and consciousness as self, they name them, thus clinging to the perception aggregate as what belongs to self. Because the mind that wants to be self participates in good and bad, etc., through actions, thus clinging to the formation aggregate as what belongs to self. There are only five aggregates. So, why do these aggregates have this order? They are arranged in order of coarseness. Among them, the form aggregate is obstructive, is the abode of the five consciousness aggregates, and is the object of the six consciousnesses, therefore it is the coarsest of all. Therefore, the form aggregate is mentioned first. The feeling aggregate is more than the previous three
