Many will arise, and even if they turn to ashes, it is permissible, so let's begin now. Why is it called "place"? The term "place" occurs without distinction even for things like the eye, which have different natures from each other. Therefore, for them, it is used as the cause of a common meaning. Because they do not understand, they ask why it is called "place." Because it is the door for the arising of consciousness, it is called "place." "Birth" means arising, and various consciousnesses arise and attain self. The door for the arising of consciousness is the cause, and the agent cause and condition are the door for the arising of consciousness. That is to say, because it is the cause of the arising of consciousness, it is called "place." In this way, what is manifested? It is manifested by definitive words. The arising, expansion, and growth of mind and mental factors are places, attaining self, and continuing to exist. This is its synonym. Among them, the eye and form are the door for the arising of eye consciousness, which is corresponding and equipped. Similarly, between mind and phenomena, it is also the door for the arising of consciousness, which is corresponding and equipped. After the place, the realms should be thoroughly distinguished, and their respective natures should be stated. Therefore, in order to show the detailed distinctions, the eighteen realms are mentioned. In order to show the respective natures of each of them, the eye realm, the form realm, and the eye consciousness realm are mentioned, up to the mind realm, the phenomena realm, and the mind consciousness realm. Here, the distinction of the form aggregate is the five faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, and the five objects of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch are also shown as their respective objects. When establishing places, it is also shown that these five faculties are the places of eye, etc., and the objects of form, etc., are the places of form, etc. When establishing realms, it is also shown that they are the eye realm to the body realm.

The space between the realm of form and the realm of touch is explained. Therefore, the realm of the eye and so on, and the realm of form and so on, are like the twelve sources, as it is said. The realm of phenomena is the source of phenomena, the three aggregates such as feeling, and the non-active and the unconditioned, which is the very nature of peace. When classifying the sources, the aggregate of consciousness itself is the source of mind. Similarly, when classifying the realms, the source of mind itself is not a realm, but when classifying the realm of the source of mind, there are seven realms of mind. Therefore, it is said, "The six realms of consciousness and so on." "Depending on the eye and so on" means depending on the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. "With form and so on as the object" means that form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena are the objects. "To distinguish" means to be able to recognize. Among them, that which relies on the eye and takes form as its object is eye consciousness, which is the realm of eye consciousness. Similarly, relying on the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, and taking sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena as objects in order, are the realms of ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind consciousness, that is, the realms of ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind consciousness. The mind realm is not separate from the six consciousnesses, and the cessation of these six consciousness realms is called the mind realm. In this way, the mind realm and the six consciousness realms are mutually inclusive, wouldn't they become seventeen realms or twelve realms? No, because this is to explain the location of the six consciousnesses. Therefore, the eighteen realms are established in this way. "Thus" refers to the explanation of the above-mentioned aspect. In "What is the form aggregate", eleven things indicate the form aggregate, among which the five faculties such as the eye and the five objects such as form are the ten sources in the source classification, and the realms

For the purpose of classification, ten realms, a portion of the dharma-āyatana, and a portion of the dharma-dhātu are called non-manifesting. What is the vijñāna-skandha? That is the mana-āyatana and the seven citta-dhātus, from the eye-vijñāna-dhātu to the mana-dhātu. Other than the rūpa and vijñāna-skandhas, the remaining three skandhas are the vedanā, saṃjñā, and saṃskāra skandhas. A portion of the rūpa-skandha is called non-manifesting, which includes the unconditioned, such as space, and the conditioned, which are the dharma-āyatana and dharma-dhātu. Why is it called dhātu? Like āyatana, it should be explained extensively. Because it holds its own characteristic without acting, it is called dhātu. It has already been shown that it is impossible for moments to be without action. Since those dharmas that are called skandhas are also explained as āyatanas and dhātus, therefore, why are skandhas, etc., explained? This is the question. All that is taught by the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is for the benefit of sentient beings and is an antidote to afflictions, therefore it is necessary. Here, since the necessity of repeatedly explaining those very dharmas in different ways is not understood, it is asked: Why are skandhas, etc., explained? This is stating the necessity. Therefore, it is said that it is to counteract the three types of self-grasping. Since the three types of self-grasping and what they counteract are not understood, therefore it is said "in order." The three types of self-grasping are: grasping as one, grasping as food, and grasping as the agent. Among them, "in order" means that explaining the skandhas is the antidote to grasping as one, explaining the āyatanas is the antidote to grasping as food, and explaining the dhātus is the antidote to grasping as the agent. All those who claim to have a self think that what is seen is the same as what is heard, smelled, tasted, and touched, and they think that it is the same as what thinks, conceives, and cognizes, and they grasp in that way. Sentient beings
