It is the base itself. Its entity is the Alaya itself. The cause of the body is that its seeds are fully nourished, and the connection of continuity is for the sake of the manifestation and accomplishment of the body. Because it is the base of the body and the cause of the body, the Alaya-consciousness itself must be acknowledged. It arises in the same way from other places, because it is the base and the cause of the 'I'-conceit. Whatever conceit that takes 'I' as its object in the Alaya-consciousness is the 'I'-conceit. The 'I'-conceit connects this with the entity of the object, so the Alaya-consciousness is the Alaya of the 'I'-conceit. Or, among those, it is called Alaya because it connects conceit with the entity of the cause. The rest is the same as before. The word 'also' in 'also because it abides in the body' means 'collection'. The body here refers to the body with the senses. The Alaya-consciousness pervades the entire body. Therefore, because it enters in connection with the body, it abides in the body because it abides in the body. Its entity is abiding in the body itself. Because it abides in the body, grasp this point and understand that this is precisely the Alaya-consciousness. It is not only called Alaya-consciousness, but it is also the grasping consciousness. Why is it called grasping consciousness? Because it is said to be for grasping the body, the cause is stated. Because this grasps the body, it is called grasping consciousness, and it is fully established that the mind grasps the body and not the 'I'. It also arises from the cause of previous actions. At the time of fainting in semen and blood, it takes existence, wanting it to grasp the body until death. It is not the eye and other consciousnesses, nor the consciousness that arises after that, because those are the causal conditions of the eye and so on after it. Among them, other consciousnesses do not arise from the cause of action, because those are virtuous and non-virtuous. What arises from the cause of action is maturation, so it is uniformly neutral. Maturation, like the eye and so on, is also a continuum.

Therefore, it is not that after cessation, there is a connection and continuation again. Which kind of Vipāka-vijñāna (ripening consciousness) is constantly, singly, and of an unpredicable nature, other than Ālayavijñāna (storehouse consciousness), nothing else is seen. Moreover, the six aggregates of consciousness arise from their respective determined places, and because they arise intermittently, it is not permissible to take all places. For example, whichever consciousness arises from whichever place, it is grasped by that consciousness itself, but the remaining places are not grasped because they are separated from consciousness. Thus, eye consciousness and the like arise again and again after being interrupted, so there is a fault of repeatedly closely grasping that place as well. Therefore, Ālayavijñāna itself, from the time of connecting rebirth, relies on all bodies from the time of taking a body until death, so it is called the taking consciousness because it holds the body from the connection of rebirth until death. In reality, saying that mind (manas) focuses on Ālayavijñāna means that the afflicted mind always focuses on Ālayavijñāna as self, and is associated with conceit, view, pride and attachment to self. That is also because it is the nature of always assuming self. In reality, that is called mind. The six aggregates of consciousness, such as eye consciousness, call the consciousness that has just ceased as mind, which is to establish the place of the sixth mind consciousness, not for the sake of ego clinging. Therefore, in reality, that is not mind itself. That is also constantly associated with the four afflictions of self-ignorance, self-view, self-pride, and self-love. Among them, self-ignorance is not merely associated with ignorance, but refers to self-ignorance itself. Similarly, it should be said for self-love and so on. Etc. also refers to being extremely associated with the five omnipresent [mental factors] such as touch and attention. That is also because it is associated with the unmanifested and mental factors, so in order to clearly distinguish its own nature, the word "consciousness" is mentioned.
