Laziness, caused by ignorance, is the lack of enthusiasm for virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind. Engaging in evil deeds is also laziness. That which is contrary to diligence is called diligence, which is the arising of joy in engaging in virtuous actions. Because it is its opposite, it is laziness, which is the function of obstructing engagement in virtuous actions. Carelessness refers to attachment, anger, and ignorance as previously described, relying on them, and becoming the basis for increasing non-virtue and decreasing virtue. What is forgetfulness? It is the memory that possesses afflictions. The term "affliction" means being associated with afflictions. The term "unclear about virtue" means that memory associated with afflictions is not different from afflictions, so it cannot make the mind clear about virtue, and it is the basis for distraction. Distraction means that it causes the mind to be distracted in various ways. Attachment, anger, and ignorance cause the mind to scatter outward from the object of meditation. According to how they correspond, the distraction of the nature of corresponding afflictions is established. It is the function of obstructing detachment from desire. What is non-discernment? It is the wisdom associated with afflictions. Through this, one unknowingly engages in the actions of body, speech, and mind, such as going and staying. Because one does not know what should be done and what should not be done, it is the basis for falling. The Detailed Explanation of the Five Aggregates, Volume Three. What is regret? It is remorse in the mind. One regrets doing evil, and its essence is regret itself. Displeasure arises in the mind towards the evil that has been done. Because it belongs to the category of mental factors, it is called regret. Whether it is desired or undesired, virtuous or non-virtuous, neutral, timely or untimely, whether one has done something unreasonable or not, any remorse of the mind that belongs to the category of ignorance is regret. This is the function of obstructing the mind from abiding. The action that is preceded by joy is desire. Undesired
