Pride is the arrogance that arises in the mind. Great pride refers to thinking oneself superior in generosity, discipline, and skills, even though one is equal to others in terms of lineage, knowledge, and wealth, or thinking oneself equal to others in knowledge and wealth, even though one is superior in lineage and wealth. This is called great pride. Pride above pride refers to thinking oneself even more superior in lineage, knowledge, and wealth than those who are already superior in these aspects. This is called pride above pride. The pride of "I am" refers to clinging to the aggregates of appropriation, where desire and attachment are appropriation. Wishing for a future body is desire, and intense clinging is attachment. Therefore, the future body is appropriated through desire, and the present aggregates are not abandoned through attachment. Hence, these two are called appropriation, and the aggregates associated with them are called aggregates of appropriation. The pride of "I am" arises from clinging to the aggregates of appropriation, which are devoid of self and what belongs to self, as if they were self and what belongs to self. What is conceit? It is the arrogance of thinking that one has attained superior qualities that one has not yet attained. Human qualities refer to desire, hatred, ignorance, and so on, as well as the actions of body, speech, and mind that arise from them. Their antidotes, such as meditation and absorption, are called superior qualities that surpass human qualities. Attaining these superior qualities means realizing them. Conceit is the arrogance of thinking that one has attained superior qualities that one has not yet realized. Slight pride refers to the arrogance of thinking that one is only slightly inferior in lineage, etc., compared to someone who is far superior in lineage, knowledge, wealth, etc. Temporarily thinking oneself equal or similar to others, or thinking oneself superior to others, or even superior to superior beings, is the arrogance of

If pride arises from being of noble birth, why would one become complacent when seeing oneself as inferior? Is this what is called pride? Because compared to the extremely superior, one considers oneself slightly inferior, just as the difference is great, one does not consider oneself inferior, so that is the place of complacency. Also, some people, even when they feel inferior among the most excellent beings, are complacent, thinking they are different. What is wrong pride? It is when one who does not possess qualities is complacent, thinking that one possesses qualities. Qualities refer to generosity, discipline, patience, and so on. Who does not possess these qualities? Or, non-qualities refer to immoral discipline, etc. Whoever possesses these is one who does not possess qualities. Therefore, to think that one possesses qualities when one does not possess them. Saying "not possessing qualities" means claiming to possess qualities without generosity, discipline, etc. Therefore, because there is no substance, it is called wrong pride. What is ignorance? It is not knowing karma and its results, the truth, and the Three Jewels. This is also divided into innate and imputed. Innate means not existing similarly to other afflictions, but being unmixed. Imputed means existing similarly to afflictions such as doubt, wrong views, and holding to discipline and vows. Not knowing karma means not knowing the existence of meritorious and non-meritorious actions, as well as unwavering actions, which means not understanding or comprehending. This is innate ignorance. Doubting the very existence of meritorious and non-meritorious actions, as well as unwavering actions, or slandering that there are no meritorious, non-meritorious, and unwavering actions, or perceiving meritorious actions as non-meritorious, thereby engaging in activities such as slaughtering livestock and burning, or perceiving non-meritorious actions as meritorious, also engaging in slaughtering livestock and burning, as well as ignorance that exists similarly to doubt and wrong views, is imputed.
