It is also associated with the mind, and also with non-virtue belonging to the desire realm, afflictions belonging to the three realms, and the unexplainable. In all activities of the mind, the aggregation of three inevitably occurs, and the aggregation of three is also without error from contact. Therefore, contact is all-pervasive. Without the activity of the mind, it is impossible to engage with an object, therefore attention is also all-pervasive. Since there is no mind that does not rely on experience and apprehending signs, feeling and perception are also all-pervasive. Volition is the very activity of the mind, therefore it also inevitably arises in all minds, and therefore these five dharmas are all-pervasive. The five are determined individually for each object, meaning that these are determined individually for each object, not for all, therefore it is said that they are determined individually for each object. They are desire, ascertainment, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom. The eleven are virtuous, and they range from faith and so on up to non-harming. They are the antidotes to non-faith and so on, and because they are associated with the root of virtue, they are virtuous dharmas, and the mind associated with them is also virtuous. The six afflictions are attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, views, and doubt. They afflict the mind, therefore they are afflictions. The remainder are near afflictions, meaning that they range from anger up to non-correct knowledge. The four, such as regret, also appear elsewhere, therefore, although it is said without distinction that the remainder are near afflictions, it is evident that it only goes as far as non-correct knowledge. Belonging to the category of afflictions, afflicting the mind, and being close to afflictions, therefore they are near afflictions. The four, such as regret, are regret, sleep, investigation, and analysis. They also appear elsewhere, meaning that these are not only near afflictions, but are also virtuous and unexplainable. This summary of mental factors, when collected, is fifty-one in total.

It is like that. Because they do not understand the respective self-nature of these, they ask what is contact? What is attention, etc. Here, it is only to explain the nature, wanting to briefly summarize, so like it appears from other places, the function is not like that. I am doing this for the sake of easy understanding. The function should also be explained. Regarding this, the self-nature has been explained before, so it has been said before. Similarly, others should also be explained as appropriate. The three being assembled and completely cutting off refers to the occasion, so the three themselves, sense faculty, object, and consciousness, are the three. That existing as the entity of cause and effect is the assembly. If it exists, then at that very time, the change of the sense faculty that is in accordance with the arising of feelings such as pleasure, and what is similar to that, experiencing pleasure etc., and what completely cuts off the aspect of the object, that is contact. Also, the sense faculty, by what particularity does it become the cause of pleasure and suffering etc., that is its change. Because it is similar to the change of the sense faculty, it is sense faculty contact or contact by sense faculty contact. Its function is to act as the basis of feeling. As it is also said in the sutra, relying on the contact that will experience pleasure, the feeling of pleasure arises. What is attention? The mind's engagement, which means engagement because it causes engagement. What causes the mind to manifestly turn towards the object, that is the mind's engagement. It has the function of holding the mind on the object, and holding the mind is to establish the mind again and again on that very object. That function is also spoken of by taking into account the specific situation of attention because the object of the mind's continuum is certain. But that is not for every moment of the mind. Obtaining attention is obtaining samadhi, what is said here is an example. There too, because special attention is obtained, it is said that attention is obtained.

These are the virtuous dharmas. Faults are the non-virtuous dharmas. Neither is the unspecified dharmas. Alternatively, merit is the beneficial dharmas. Faults are the harmful dharmas. Neither is the intermediate state. 'Mental activity' means that which moves the mind, that is, if it exists, it moves the mind towards the object, just as iron is moved by the power of a magnet. 'Not abiding for another moment, even the mind without a doer, by what does it appear as if with a doer? Thinking, that is the action of the mind.' So it is said. Having explained 'mental activity' in this way, why is it called 'action of the mind'? Because all mental events cause mental activity, therefore, the term 'action of the mind' is used to distinguish it from others. It is to be known that the dharma that causes consciousness to move in all directions is thinking, and not something else. Saying that mental activity is in virtue, fault, and neither, is stating the action. Saying 'action of the mind' is stating the nature of thinking itself. What is desire? It is said to be wanting the object of thought. Mentioning 'thought' is to make it known that there is no desire for what is not thought about. Thus, it is shown that desire is definite in each individual object. Whatever is the object of actions such as seeing and hearing is the object of thought. Wanting to see and hear in that is seeking meaning. If desire is the nature of wanting, then what is the difference between attachment and desire? Attachment is characterized by manifest clinging, while desire is characterized by wanting, so there is a difference. This has the function of being the basis for initiating diligence. What is faith? It is defined as holding firmly to a definite object as it is. Mentioning 'definite' is to make it known that not all objects are objects of faith, and it is impossible to hold firmly to an indefinite object as it is. Whatever is an object of reason or a reliable teaching, in which there is no doubt, is definite, such as impermanence and suffering, etc.
