DTG136 0011.Explanation of the Twentieth Chapter..g2.0f

English

In order to be completely liberated, examples are given, such as "in a dream" and so on. For example, in a dream, semen is produced without the union of male and female, similarly, the harm of dreams also occurs, similarly, hair, flesh, flies, food and drink, cities and towns, poison and weapons, and the dripping of the tongue, these things that should be covered, even without hair etc. will occur. The meaning of "without the meeting of two" is that male and female do not meet. Therefore, in order to answer the above four refutations and draw a conclusion, therefore it is said "so temporarily" and so on. In this way, temporarily through other examples, the four, such as place and time, are established. The word "temporarily" also indicates that "will also be established" will be said below. Again, in order to answer all four refutations with one example, it is said "everything is like hell beings". For example, in hell beings, even without meaning, there are four certainties such as place, similarly, in other places, even without meaning, all these four will also be established, this is the brief meaning. In order to express only through the verb, it is said "should be understood as established", this is just expressing that meaning. In order to illustrate the similarity, it is said "in hell beings" and so on, this is just expressing that meaning. Because the four certainties such as place are not stated in hell beings, it is asked how it is established, and in order for the treatise author to explain that it is indeed established, it is said "the guards of hell" and so on. For example, even without the guards of hell, pottery and huge copper vessels etc., the hell beings will clearly see the place and time. All those who dwell in that place and time will see without distinction, and even without those things, they will cause all kinds of harm, this is the brief meaning. In order to extensively explain the meaning briefly expressed by the treatise author, it is said "for example in hell beings" and so on. For example, the hell of hell beings.

Just as the guardians of hell, etc., are established in definite places and times. In order to explain the meaning implied by the word "etc.," dogs and crows, etc., are mentioned, namely dogs, crows, and iron balls, etc., thus combining the words. Here, too, the mention of "etc." is to include earthenware pots and large copper pots, etc. In order to show the uncertainty of mind, "all" etc. are mentioned, but that meaning is merely a connection of words. In order to show the performance of actions, it is said, "It is also established that they harm them," that is, it is established that they inflict various kinds of harm. Here it is understood that if the guardians of hell, etc., did not exist, how could the four certainties, such as place, arise? To this question, "even without" etc. are mentioned, that is, even if they do not exist, these four certainties are established. If they do not exist, how are they established? To this question, "the ripening of their own karma is the same" etc. are mentioned, that is, those who will experience suffering, from the karma previously done, when its ripening manifests, the appearance of the guardians of hell, dogs, crows, iron mountains, earthenware pots, and large copper pots, etc., is merely the manifestation of consciousness, and through the illusion of the guardians of hell, etc., those hell beings generate the feeling of suffering, and the consciousness of all those who have done the karma of experiencing so much suffering manifests as the image of the guardians of hell, etc., thereby generating the feeling of suffering, and not just to some individuals. This is not impossible, because it is also seen in dreams. For example, in the dream of a sinner, due to the power of karma, consciousness manifests as the image of lions, tigers, and robbers, etc., thereby generating suffering and fear, etc., and similarly in the hells. Therefore, now, in order to explain the four certainties such as place by means of an example, and then to explain the actual situation, "similarly in other places" etc. are mentioned, and its meaning has already been explained. The Vaibhashikas believe in the guardians of hell.

etc., as sentient beings. Here, it is said "why" etc. because of refuting in that way. For what reason do you not consider the guards of hell, dogs, and crows to be sentient beings? Like this, those also appear to have the characteristics of sentient beings, and they also move like sentient beings. Like this, those also show the actions, behaviors, and speech of intelligence, and with those two, it is possible to infer that others have minds. If those two do not infer that those have minds, then at that time, it will be impossible to infer that other creatures have minds, because those two are mistaken. In order to show that they do not belong to living beings, it is said, "because they do not belong." In order to show that very non-belonging, it is said, "those are" etc. Like this, the guards of hell do not belong to the sentient beings of hell. Why do they not belong? It is said, "like that" etc. Just as other sentient beings of hell experience the sufferings of hell separately, those do not experience it in that way. Those who harm do not experience suffering as harming, It is said that there is nothing that harms those guards of hell. Those who move like sentient beings are also not voluntary, but due to the karma of the sentient beings of hell. The characteristics of sentient beings are also present in the body of form and the body of painting, and this will change here, thinking that one harms the other, it is said, "one to one" etc. If the sentient beings of hell and the guards of the sentient beings of hell harm each other, then these are the sentient beings of hell, these are the guards of the sentient beings of hell, and in this way, it will be impossible to establish them separately without confusion. Like this, those who should be harmed are considered to be the sentient beings of hell, those who harm are considered to be the guards of the sentient beings of hell, if both are equally harmed, or are the harmers themselves, then which are the sentient beings of hell, and which are the guards of the sentient beings of hell?
