Explanation of the Twentieth Chapter. Deity of Discipline. Explanation of the Twentieth Chapter. Deity of Discipline. In Sanskrit: Prakaraṇa-viṃśaka-ṭīkā. In Tibetan: Explanation of the Twentieth Chapter. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Because your mind relies on compassion, You are always pleased to benefit others, Homage to the one who destroys ignorance! The twentieth chapter is differentiation. The first sentence, "In the Mahāyāna, the three realms are established as only consciousness," directly shows the necessity of this treatise, the nature of what is to be expressed, and the necessity of the necessity. The connection should be examined through meaning. The connection of the treatise, what is to be expressed, and the necessity must be stated definitively. Otherwise, a treatise without connection, without what is to be expressed, without necessity, and without the necessity of the necessity, will not be accepted by listeners who engage in prior thought. Therefore, the term "Mahāyāna" shows the necessity of the necessity. The term "the three realms are established as only consciousness" shows what is to be expressed and the necessity. Here, the three realms as only consciousness are shown by both scripture and reasoning. This is what is to be expressed. Showing the three realms as only consciousness is the necessity. That showing is done by means of differentiation, therefore, differentiation is the method of this necessity. Therefore, the two, differentiation and necessity, exist in relation to each other by the nature of method and the result arising from the method. In such a situation, if someone objects, saying, what is the use of showing the three realms as only consciousness? Therefore, the term "Mahāyāna" is spoken. From that, the meaning of the sentence arises: "Showing the three realms as only consciousness is for the sake of attaining the Mahāyāna." This is, for the moment, the general meaning. Now, the meaning of the branches is to be stated. The term "Mahāyāna," because it carries, is a vehicle. Or, because one wants to arrive here, it is a vehicle. Since it is both a vehicle and great, it is the Mahāyāna. Therefore, the path and fruit of a Bodhisattva are called a vehicle.

It is taught as "Mahayana." "Great" means that it is superior to other vehicles that are not this one, and should be understood as such. For example, there, by knowing the selflessness of the person, only the obscuration of afflictions is abandoned. Here, by knowing the selflessness of both the person and phenomena, the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge are abandoned. Alternatively, it is called "great" because it possesses seven greatnesses. The seven greatnesses are: object, practice, wisdom, diligence, skillful means, true accomplishment, and action. Here, "to" should be understood as meaning cause, that is, the cause of the Great Vehicle, the meaning of obtaining the Great Vehicle. Thus, there are two types of taming: those tamed by teaching the selflessness of the person, and those tamed by teaching the selflessness of phenomena. Among them, those tamed by teaching the selflessness of the person, relying on that teaching, understand that phenomena are subject to arising and ceasing, are separate from self and what belongs to self, and are merely aggregates, and thus, through the stages of hearing and thinking, enter into the selflessness of the person. Entering into selflessness, they are separated from the obscuration of afflictions and ultimately attain the state of completion. The method of teaching their means has already been stated elsewhere. Those who are tamed by teaching the selflessness of phenomena, relying on that teaching, through the stages of listening to and contemplating treatises that are in accordance with the thorough realization of the sphere of reality, are for the purpose of completely destroying the apprehended and the apprehender. This exposition shows the very means of completely destroying the apprehended and the apprehender. Having completely destroyed them, one enters into mere consciousness, which is separate from the apprehended and the apprehender. Then, by cultivating the grounds and perfections, one completely eliminates the apprehended and the apprehender, realizes the sphere of reality, and thus attains the unsurpassed state of the Tathagata, and therefore, thinking about it, it is said that it is for the purpose of attaining the Great Vehicle. The so-called three realms are the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Because these three are realms, they are the three realms. Among them, whatever mind and mental factors have not yet separated from desire and attachment to the desire realm, those are the desire realm. Those who have separated from desire and attachment to the desire realm, but have not yet separated from desire and attachment to the form realm,
