and so on. The term 'intention' means acceptance. It is a synonym for 'desire.' That is to say, this triple world is merely mind and what arises from mind, but it is not merely mind alone. In the scriptures, the term 'mind' is also used for mental factors, such as 'it is good to tame the mind,' and mental factors are not untamable. As it is said, 'This world is led by the mind.' This means that it is also led by mental factors such as feelings and craving. If mental factors are also accepted, then why is the word 'merely' used? To this doubt, it is said 'merely' and so on. The reason for saying 'merely' is to negate the 'meaning' other than consciousness, but it is not to negate mental factors. The so-called 'for the sake of negating meaning' is to negate the 'meaning' of the nature of the apprehended and the apprehender other than consciousness. That is to say, other than consciousness, there is no apprehended whatsoever, and for consciousness, there is no apprehension of the apprehender. If the 'meaning' of the nature of the apprehended and the apprehender does not exist, then what is this appearance of blue and so on? To the question of 'by what does it appear,' it is said 'what appears here is consciousness itself' and so on. Due to the power of the complete maturation of the habit of proliferation, consciousness itself appears as the form of the 'meaning' of blue and so on. When such a situation occurs, beings develop an arrogant thought, thinking that they see a 'meaning' that exists in another place. For example, when the appearance of blue and so on appears, it appears together with the realm of space. When the realm of space appears, it makes it seem as if the consciousness of blue and so on is separate from the realm of space. For example, when the image of the moon appears on the surface of a mirror, the realm of space appears together with the image. When the realm of space becomes an image there, it makes it seem as if the circle of the moon is separate from the surface of the mirror, as if it has fallen into a well.

Similarly, when the realm of space appears to consciousness, it also appears as forms such as blue, as if divided. Based on these divided-like forms such as blue, beings develop the pride of thinking, "I see an external object." Here, to illustrate with an example, it is said, "For example, those with cataracts," and so on. For example, those with eyes impaired by cataracts experience the appearance of hair, flesh flies, mosquitoes, and so on. Even when hair and such are not present, they still have the pride of thinking they see sounds and so on. Similarly, in other instances as well, it is consciousness itself that appears as blue and so on. The statement that there are no external objects such as blue existing separately is the conclusion. One who has cataracts is one with cataracts. Thus, for the moment, the apprehended is refuted. If the apprehended is refuted, then the apprehender is also refuted by that very fact, because: Thus, if there is no apprehended, then there is no apprehender either. Thus, the refutation of the apprehended is in order to show the fault proclaimed by those who assert external objects. Here, it is said, "Here, one objects, saying," and so on. If consciousness does not arise from external objects, then the objects of consciousness will not be definite, time will not be definite, mind will not be definite, and action will not be established. This is a summary of the essential points. Here, "here" refers to the previous position. "One objects, saying" means that having clearly established in mind the definiteness of objects and so on, which will be discussed below, one thinks as follows. "Object and time are indefinite," where "definite" means fixed. "Appearing in some objects but not in all" refers to the definiteness of the object. "Appearing sometimes but not always" refers to the definiteness of time. "Appearing without distinction to all present in that object and time, but not to some" refers to the indefiniteness of mind. "Performing action" refers to the performance of action. The treatise writer, in order to clarify the meaning of the sutra, says, "How will the meaning of what has been said be explained?" and so on. If consciousness arises appearing as forms such as color, without the existence of external objects such as color, then external objects such as color
