And, the consciousnesses of tongue and body are each their own seeds, and appearances should also be called external ayatanas. If consciousness is not like appearance, how can it be established as a separate ayatana? Answer: For example, although the mind element does not exist separately from the collection of the six consciousnesses, it is established separately in consideration of the result, and it is the same here. Therefore, in order to show that it is intended and to conclude, it is said, "This is the intention here." It is said in the sutra that the ayatanas of form and so on exist in consideration of seeds and appearances, but it is not said that they are separate from consciousness. In order to ask about the intention of the sutra that is intended to be shown, it is said, "Thus." Just as the fruit shown by the intention of explaining the beings born miraculously, it should also be said what is the fruit of intending to show the existence of ayatanas such as form. In order to show the fruit, the treatise writer said, "Thus, one will enter into no-self." In order to explain it in detail, it is said, "If it is said that way," etc., because if the twelve ayatanas are explained in that way, one will realize that the person is without substance, and without substance is no-self. If one wonders how to realize it, it is said, "From the two sixes," etc., meaning that, in this way, from the six internal ayatanas such as the eye and the six external ayatanas such as form, the six consciousnesses such as eye consciousness arise, and the one lord who is the seer does not exist in the true meaning, not even as the toucher. In this way, those who say, "I am the doer," also do the seeing, etc., which are acknowledged by them, by the internal and external ayatanas, and when this is shown, one realizes that the person is without substance. That is to say, showing the twelve ayatanas, one realizes that the formations are not made by the "I" other than the eye, etc., but are without self. After realizing that the formations are without self, one will become disgusted with them and attain the ultimate state.

Here, the translation is: If nirvana can be attained simply by understanding the selflessness of persons, then why is the doctrine of mind-only taught? Therefore, the scriptures also mention "the selflessness of phenomena," and so on. By teaching mind-only, one can enter into the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, mind-only is taught for the purpose of leading people into the selflessness of phenomena. Here, "entering" which causes entry, is a synonym for understanding. To clarify the meaning of the word "other," the scriptures also mention "other," and so on, which is easy to understand. Someone, not believing that teaching mind-only can lead to the selflessness of phenomena, asks: How does this teaching lead to the selflessness of phenomena? Because the treatise elucidates the method of entry, the scriptures mention "only this consciousness," and so on. Only this consciousness appears as forms, etc. When there is no dharma of the nature of form, etc., in the mind, if one realizes this, then one has entered into the selflessness of phenomena. If one enters into the selflessness of phenomena, bodhisattvas will gradually attain the state of the Tathagata. Therefore, this meaning is the main point, and so the Bhagavan taught mind-only for such a meaning. If, like the selflessness of persons, there is no person in any way, then the selflessness of phenomena should also be like there being no phenomena in any way. To prevent others from refuting in this way, the scriptures mention "if phenomena," and so on. If the absence of phenomena is the selflessness of phenomena, then there would be no phenomena at all in any way. If that were the case, then mind-only would also not exist, so how can it be established? To this, the teacher explains "phenomena are," and so on. It is not that there is no dharma at all in any way, that kind of non-existence is not entering into the selflessness of phenomena, but rather one enters into the selflessness of phenomena through the non-existence of imputed phenomena. If one asks what the nature of imputed phenomena is, the scriptures mention "whatever children," and so on. Whatever dharmas are clung to by ordinary beings
