Their arising is that the earlier afflictions become the cause of the later afflictions, thereby obtaining the nature of the later afflictions. The basis for arising is that from afflictions such as ignorance turning into wrong knowledge, doubt, and desire, the actions and births of rebirth arise, but if not ignorant, it is not so. Pride, all that is called pride, arises dependent on the view of the perishable aggregate. That is the characteristic of mental arrogance, in this way, falsely imputing the aggregates as self or belonging to self, "This is self," "This belongs to self," thus, due to the differences of this and that, one's mind is arrogant, and one thinks of oneself as superior to others. That is the function of serving as a basis for the arising of disrespect and suffering. Disrespect is being arrogant towards the lamas and those with qualities, and lacking service of body and speech. The arising of suffering is the arising of rebirth here. Although it is undifferentiated in its own nature of mental certainty, it is differentiated into seven types due to the difference in the cause of mental arrogance, namely pride and great pride, and so on. Even if one is inferior in terms of lineage, knowledge, wealth, etc., one thinks, "I am great in terms of lineage, knowledge, and wealth," or among those equal in lineage, etc., one thinks, "I am equal to them," this is pride. Great pride is thinking, "I am greater in terms of generosity, discipline, and practice, etc., than those equal in lineage, knowledge, and wealth, etc.," or thinking, "I am equal to those who are great in lineage, wealth, and intelligence, etc., in terms of knowledge and wealth, etc.," this is great pride.
