The meaning of the base must be explained. For example, regarding the meaning of a Bhikṣuṇī, it is said in the Sutra that Ānanda placed his mind externally, thinking, "The mind has been placed externally." After that, as before, he summarized, thinking, "My mind has been placed externally, and I am liberated," truly knowing as it is. This is the "showing." The rest is the "explanation." Similarly, "Monks, I went forth when I was very young," this is the "showing." "Extremely young" and "very young" are the "explanation," because the state of being very young is completely explained by the two differences of nature and time. The remaining praise of perfect and complete bliss is a detailed explanation, because it extensively explains the state of being extremely, very, and exceedingly young. Similarly, what is dependent origination? That is, "This being, that arises; this arising, that arises," this is the "showing." For example, "Conditioned by ignorance, actions," and so on, appearing extensively, is the "explanation." Similarly, "Venerables, these twelve are leisure," from this statement, the appearance of "self and others being perfectly complete" is the "showing," and the rest is the "explanation," because the "showing" and the "explanation" together become the twelve branches. Like this and so on, the necessary meaning of the words of "showing" must also be explained. Just as "the five aggregates" and "the six internal sense bases," and so on, like this, even in cases where numbers are mentioned, it is not that the meaning to be expressed is not understood, but why is it necessary to explain the necessary meaning of mentioning the numbers? Similarly, if the meaning to be expressed by other words is well-known, but they themselves do not have the power of meaning, therefore it is also necessary to explain their necessary meaning. For example, the meaning to be expressed by the statement, "He traveled and passed away in such and such a place in Śrāvastī," is well-known in the world, but why would the Buddha or a Śrāvaka travel and pass away? Similarly, why did the Bhagavan remain in perfect stillness for two and a half months? Why did the venerable Mahā-udara, the venerable Śāriputra...

If someone asks, is it also necessary to explain the necessity of things like "went there" etc.? Regarding this, the necessary meanings of the various names that have been mentioned have already been explained, and now the remaining ones will be explained. For the time being, just as the words that explain the scriptures can grasp the meaning of the scriptures, merely explaining it can grasp the meaning of what is said, for this reason; and in order to follow those who can understand by mentioning the beginning; and for those who are different from this, understanding can be accumulated by mentioning the beginning later; and in order to correctly show having and possessing in summary and detailed explanation; and in order to let others generate its seed by being accustomed to this. If the minds of yogis can be equally placed only by explaining from the scriptures, then how can they be equally placed on all the detailed meanings? Therefore, for this purpose, it is shown through both explanation and exposition.” This is what the scripture says. The reason for stating numbers is: some are for the purpose of definitely grasping the objects to be counted, such as the five aggregates and the six internal sources, etc. Some are for the purpose of not forgetting by mentioning numbers, some are for the purpose of easy grasping, for example, if someone's mind is defiled by twenty-one near afflictions, and also in the ten bhumis, from "one dharma is cherished" up to the tenth bhumi. Some are for the purpose of making those who do not listen because they need detailed explanations listen more, and for the purpose of making those who are afraid of grasping listen. For example, these three are the faculties, namely the female faculty, the male faculty, and the life faculty. Some are for the purpose of generating joy in those who are afraid of doing many things, for example, monks, abandon one dharma, and I guarantee that you will not return. Some are for the purpose of showing that one includes the other, for example, these, if they become five, will become three, and if they become three, they will become five. Some are for the purpose of knowing the quantity, for example, the collection of sixty good tribes. Some are
