The Logic of Explanation Vasubandhu The Logic of Explanation Vasubandhu In Sanskrit: Vyākhyāyukti In Tibetan: The Logic of Explanation. Chapter One. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Residing before the assembly of the wise, in order to exhaust the two, ignorance and sleep, and because of the increase of wisdom, having become Buddha, I prostrate with my head to the Sage. To those who, with pride, have little wisdom, who wish to explain the Sutras, for the sake of benefiting them, I will briefly explain the oral instructions. Those who wish to explain the Sutras must first have much learning, be a vessel of learning, and accumulate learning. How is it to have much learning, to be a vessel of learning, and to accumulate learning? It is like what is extensively taught in the Sutras, such as "What is good in the beginning?" Among these, Dharma is the Sutras, etc., by the meaning of showing the reasoning, and by the meaning of grasping the meaning as it is, without inversion. Brahmacharya is the path of Nirvana. Nirvana is Brahman in the sense of being supremely principal, because it has been said, "Peaceful, cool, and become Brahman." Among these, that by which one practices, approaches, and obtains, that is Brahmacharya, just as that by which one becomes intoxicated is called alcohol. Its beginning, middle, and end are the aggregates of morality, samadhi, and wisdom. Thus, as it is said in the Sutra of the Kashyapiyas: "Monks, I have taught you the good in the beginning, the good in the middle, and the good in the end. What is the beginning of Brahmacharya? It is abiding in morality," and so on extensively. "What is the middle of Brahmacharya? It is being separated from desires," from which it is said extensively, "Abiding completely between the four dhyanas." "What is the end of Brahmacharya? It is this is the noble truth of suffering," from which, as it is, knowing thoroughly, until the wisdom seeing the thought of liberation arising from liberation." Thus it is said extensively. Goodness is also because it is without complete decay, it is not deceptive. The meaning is good, the words are good.

That which is expressed by the two, namely, the order being unreversed and the ability to understand, is for the sake of complete expression. The unmixed and so forth are because they are not common, because they are the antidote to all afflictions, and because liberation is achieved through the two, namely, self-nature and the liberation of the continuum, in that order. Furthermore, the virtue of the beginning, middle, and end is because of the goodness of the meaning, the goodness of the words, and the unmixed nature and so forth. Moreover, as an antidote to the doctrines of outsiders, the greatness of these doctrines is fully revealed, for the doctrines of outsiders do not well demonstrate pure conduct in the beginning, middle, and end, because they contradict each other from beginning to end. Nor are they virtuous, because the meaning and words are flawed. Nor are they unmixed, because they are common with others. Nor are they completely perfect, because they are temporary antidotes. Nor are they completely pure, because they serve as a basis for constantly engaging in one's own afflictions. Nor are they completely tamed, because they possess the latent tendencies of afflictions from other grounds. These doctrines and so forth are the opposite of that. Some recite it as having meaning and having words, from which it is shown that having meaning and having words is virtuous. That which is expressed by manifestation is called understanding, and these are to show the doctrine that is spoken. Those doctrines that arise from that, because they are not of the nature of language, cannot understand the meaning themselves, but understand through transmission. Furthermore, whatever is of that nature is expressed by manifestation, but not by changing the letters and explaining them separately, for if it becomes too excessive, it is not permissible. Whatever is expressed when manifesting, that is recited as expressing, the meaning of that is when the meaning of the word is famous and one speaks oneself, but not when changing the letters and explaining them separately, as in the verses spoken by Mara, the life of people is
