It should be known that wherever there is listening to the holy Dharma, one should respect it. Most of the listeners are inclined towards the laity, most of the upholders have passed away, and the power has been destroyed by incorrect explanations, so that good explanations have now come to an end. This verse shows that nowadays, in two respects, the four kinds of decline of Buddhism, and the state of approaching decline. Most of the listeners are inclined towards the laity, which shows that the listening of the laity is completely declining, because they are mostly listeners. Most of the upholders have passed away, which shows that the recitation of the renunciates is completely declining, because they are mostly upholders, because they uphold what they have heard. With incorrect explanations, this shows that the explanation of the meaning of the Dharma is completely declining, because they incorrectly explain the meaning of the Dharma. Destroyed the power, this shows the decline of realization, for what purpose? It is said for the purpose of realizing the fruit of the discipline of the monks, but that does not work. This can be summarized as two kinds of decline: the complete decline of the teachings of both words and meanings, and the complete decline of realization. Furthermore, the listeners are inclined towards the laity, and most of the upholders have passed away, which shows that listening is completely declining. Incorrect explanations show that proper attention is completely declining. Destroying the power shows that proper practice is completely declining. Now the good explanation has come to an end, which shows the state of approaching decline. Therefore, knowing that the Buddha's teachings are declining and cannot last long, as long as there is still a little left, believers should strive to listen, uphold, and practice according to its meaning. Nowadays, the teachings of the Able One, the speakers are few, and those who can distinguish gold and silver have become rare. Thus, due to insufficient effort in teaching and realization, the Buddha, like the sun, is perfect and immaculate, and has now set in the west. Like that.

As long as everything in the world has not disappeared, strive to distinguish the meanings as they are. If the light of the Buddha's speech disappears, all beings will fall into a dense darkness. Therefore, in order to prevent the dense darkness from arising, and for the sake of thoroughly distinguishing the meaning as it is, those who have faith in listening to the Buddha's speech should be extremely careful. That which comes from the mouth of the Teacher, which pacifies the cataract of the eye of birth, place the source of auspiciousness in your mind. Why? Because this is the nectar for the ears of sentient beings, and because it eliminates all the poisons of afflictions, contemplate the true meaning well. With these causes, one should always respectfully listen to the Buddha's teachings. What are the causes? Because this comes from such a mouth, and because it pacifies the eye, and because it is the source of auspiciousness, and because the words themselves are excellent, it is the nectar for the ears of sentient beings, and because the meaning itself is excellent, it eliminates all the poisons of afflictions. These are the causes. Thus, the speaker, the speech, and the perfection of meaning are shown. Listening to the Buddha's speech brings peace, thinking about it brings understanding, understanding it brings liberation, speaking it is good, it is rich because it accomplishes the seven noble riches, it is merit because it washes away the seven faults, it is auspicious because it precedes all virtues, it is beneficial for life because it makes one the master of constant pure conduct, it is naturally pure, its intention is gentle, it is in accordance with meaning, it is in accordance with discipline, it arrives at the right time, it is well spoken, it leads to merit, it leads to wisdom, it leads to joy, it removes fear, it removes sorrow, it removes afflictions. In short, the Buddha's speech has infinite qualities, but there are two great faults: it is very difficult to find and it does not last long. Therefore, one should quickly and respectfully listen to it. The three causes are complete.

Just as leather becomes pliable through oiling, rubbing, and warming, so too does the mind become pliable through hearing, contemplating, and meditating. Therefore, in order to make the mind pliable, one should diligently engage in hearing and so forth. Those who travel on the path, by the power of these three, will easily cross the wilderness, just as one crosses with the strength of provisions for the road, the strength of a mount, and the strength of a guide. Similarly, those who travel on the path through the wilderness of samsara do so by the power of generosity, discipline, and wisdom. All three of these depend on hearing. Even just having faith in the words of the Buddha can overwhelm great sins, because virtue is more powerful than non-virtue. How is this to be known? Through ten distinctions: By the distinction of action, both virtue and non-virtue are manifestly performed with or without effort. By the distinction of aspect, because one is as it is, and the other is inverted. By the distinction of association, because it is associated with the three roots of virtue and the two or one roots of non-virtue. By the distinction of ground, because it is all grounds or one ground. By the distinction of the number of fruits, because the fruits are five kinds and four kinds. By the distinction of the ultimate fruit, because the time is superior and inferior. Thus, the fruit of virtue arises for eighty thousand great kalpas, while that of non-virtue is only until the intermediate kalpa. By the distinction of correct explanation, because virtue can temporarily correctly explain non-virtue, but non-virtue can never be correctly explained by virtue. By the distinction of destroying many in a short time, such as by the single moment of the path of abandonment, many discordant aspects that have entered from beginningless time are completely destroyed. By the distinction of abandonment, such as by the arising of an antidote, non-virtue is abandoned, but not virtue. By the distinction of direction, such as
