And, the demons make beings weary with desire, and the uncontrolled who are to be tamed are afflicted by weariness. Therefore, one should respectfully listen to the Buddha's teachings. Just as a stone of stone ashes, burned by fire, is destroyed by water, so too, the stone of the latent tendencies of afflictions, completely burned by the fire of wisdom, is abandoned and destroyed by the water of samadhi. And that wisdom cannot be obtained without listening to the sacred Dharma, therefore, one should respectfully listen to the Dharma. Even if one carries the burden of words, if one does not manifestly understand the meaning, one will not obtain its meaning, just as a letter of a treasure testament is hung around the neck of a child. Therefore, in order to understand the meaning through much learning, one should strive and be diligent in listening to the meaning of the Sutras. Just as it is said, "The watchmen, not thinking separately, are robbed by thieves." Similarly, much learning that only focuses on sound, without separate thought, is also destroyed by the enemies of afflictions. If there is separate thought but no understanding of the meaning, it is useless, therefore, one should strive to grasp the meaning. Similarly, one can also use the example of a musician who, fearing thieves, does not sleep, but is robbed while singing. Just as a blind person holding a torch cannot benefit others, so too, holding onto learning without manifest understanding of the meaning is like that, therefore, in order to understand the meaning, one should strive to listen to the meaning. The Buddha's teachings are suitable as the characteristics of treatises because they ascertain the meaning and protect, therefore they are called treatises. Whatever completely tames the enemies of afflictions, and protects from the suffering of bad rebirths, whatever qualities of taming and protecting there are, are called treatises, these two qualities are not found in other systems. Therefore, only the Buddha's teachings are ultimately treatises, and for the sake of the qualities of taming and protecting, one should also strive to grasp the meaning. Relying on a good teacher has five benefits: completely abandoning the evil path, abiding correctly on the good path, transcending the wilderness and solitary places, walking in comfort, and the desired destination.
