One should listen to the Buddha's teachings. Fire has four functions: burning, cooking, warming, and illuminating. Similarly, the fire of the Buddha's teachings, for those who are mature, can burn away afflictions; for those who are not mature, it can ripen the roots of virtue; for those who are attached to samsara, it burns them to make them weary; and for those who are weary, and those who are doubtful, and those who have entered the wrong path, it illuminates to show them the right path and the wrong path. Therefore, one should listen to the Dharma with respect. One should rely on a pleasant bathing place with five foundations: to remove dirt, to completely pacify heat, to completely quench thirst, to experience joyful play, and to go from this shore to the other shore. The Buddha's teachings are also like a pleasant bathing place: to remove the dirt of immoral conduct, to completely pacify the torment of desire, to pacify the thirst for rebirth, to experience the joyful play of special qualities such as meditation, supernormal powers, immeasurables, and liberation, and to go from this shore of the view of the perishable aggregate to the other shore of Nirvana. Therefore, those who desire the benefits of relying on a pleasant bathing place should respectfully listen to the Buddha's teachings. For three reasons, it is impossible to paint a picture on cloth: because the cloth is moving, because it is dirty, and because of the fault of the threads themselves; because the paint is not good; and because the painter is not skilled. Similarly, it is impossible to paint the image of correct wisdom on the cloth of the listener's mind: because it is moving due to distraction, obscuration, and past obscurations, because it is dirty, and because of the fault of inequality itself; because the paint of wrongly taught Dharma is not good; and because the Dharma-speaking painter is not skilled. Therefore, there is no fault in the paint, the Dharma is...

Because it has been well spoken. You and we will have faults, and in order to completely avoid them, you should also respectfully listen to the Buddha's words, and we should also respectfully speak them. There are five benefits to listening to the sacred Dharma: to make the unknown known, to abandon wrong grasping, to ascertain what is uncertain, to make what is certain the essence, and to train the eye of noble wisdom. Therefore, one should respectfully listen to the sacred Dharma. A blind person may still find the path of the teacher's virtues, but a fool will not if he falls into wrong paths. Therefore, the blind are better, but not the fool, because the cause of the fool is not listening. Therefore, one should think: How can I not become a fool? One should respectfully listen to the Dharma. The mind, which moves like a monkey, has two aspects: distraction and drowsiness. To prevent these, one should say: Respectfully listen to the Buddha's words. Some, even if they have embarked on the wrong path, can become medicine if they gradually practice. Carefully analyze good and non-good, and then think and act as you wish. If someone makes a mistake, they can correct themselves, know that this is correct, and perhaps get what they want. After examining these three virtues, one should say to respectfully listen to the words of the Able One. This was also said with three kinds of people in mind, these three kinds of people are: those who inevitably go astray from the good, those who want to practice but do not understand, and those who do not want to practice and become indulgent, becoming those with defiled karma. When the sun rises in the sky, it does five things: it creates sight for humans and others, it prevents the sight of owls and others, it ripens grains and other things that need to be ripened, it dries up swamps and other things that need to be dried, and it warms bodies and water and other things that need to be warmed. Similarly, the sun of the Buddha's words can also generate correct views, prevent wrong views, ripen the seeds of virtuous roots and other things in the fields of those to be tamed, and dry up the swamp of desire.
