Karma is for abandoning afflictions along with their imprints. It is also for abandoning the obscuration of knowledge, because it is for manifestly and completely awakening to all aspects of all knowable things. There is also a difference in methods, because there is a difference in mindfulness and so forth. Now, if the Buddhas are not like that, but show themselves to be the same, are they deceiving the Shravakas? The Buddhas have both sameness and superiority, so where is the deception in this? The Buddhas act in equality, taming certain beings, as it is said in the Sutra of the First Marvel, are they deceiving them? What the Blessed One said, that in the ultimate truth of emptiness, karma exists, and ripening also exists, but the agent is not found, is that ultimately true or conventionally true? What difference does it make? If it is ultimately true, then how are all dharmas without inherent existence? If it is conventionally true, then the agent also exists conventionally, so it should not be said that the agent is not found. For the time being, what is this "conventional"? What is the ultimate truth? From that, what should be known to exist conventionally, and what should be known to exist ultimately? Names, expressions, designations, and conventions are conventional, but the own-characteristics of dharmas are not ultimately true. If that is the case, then karma and ripening both have names and own-characteristics, so understanding how they exist depends on how you understand them. We believe that the person exists conventionally, but not substantially, because its name is designated on the aggregates. Karma and ripening are substantially existent in the conventional, but not in the ultimate, because they are the objects of worldly knowledge. The ultimate is the wisdom that transcends the world, because that is its meaning, so it is the ultimate truth. The own-characteristics of these two are not its objects, because its object is the inexpressible external characteristic. Here, worldly knowledge or transmundane

If it is said to be valid cognition, then the only one is the transcendent. Worldly phenomena are differentiated; whatever is obtained after the transcendent is valid cognition. Others are not valid cognition. Thus, the verses of the Mahasanghika monks say: The eye, ear, and nose are not valid cognition, nor are the tongue, body, and mind. If these faculties were valid cognition, then the activity of the noble path would cease. This is also made consistent with that. Furthermore, some Mahayanists say that all things are only empty in their own nature, but in conventional truth, the Blessed One taught that phenomena exist, and that this is the literal meaning. For those who say this, the debate about what was taught will also arise. Eighth fascicle. Saying "conventional" is also an expression, and that which is in accordance with all defilements is called bad speech, while that which is in accordance with purification is called good speech. If it is merely an expression, then how can it become good speech or bad speech? Some conventional truths must inevitably be actually acknowledged. Alternatively, if that too does not exist, then how is it said to exist in conventional truth? Because by slandering all defilements and purifications, one does not abide in either what is appropriate or inappropriate, and because one denies one's own statement, it becomes inexpressible. If it is said to be intentional, then these faults will not occur. If one does not merely think that conventional truth is just sound, then the verses that appear in the Mahayana: All these are just names, they only abide in concepts, apart from expression, there is nothing to be expressed. How does this become established? Here, it is prevented that there is nothing to be expressed apart from expression, but it is not the nature of things that are inexpressible. In that way, it is just like this: it only abides in concepts. What is said is also that here, the concept arising from the mind is called concept. Because the sutra says, 'As concepts arise, so names are subsequently established.' The name itself abides in the name.
