That is because it turns into cycles, becomes larger and smaller. For that very reason, there is no autonomy. Then, how should a shadow be described? Whatever makes visible the forms that exist when its domain is separated from the sun is a shadow. A flame also does not move, because the firewood burns its own part and dies there. And the different parts of the firewood that arise, diminish, sharpen, and cling are different because of that. Therefore, there is no autonomy. For consciousness, what kind of examination of the function of consciousness can prove its autonomy? For example, other than the three differences of sense faculty, object appearance, and attention, the ability to generate consciousness is not established. And these are interdependent, therefore, autonomy exists in themselves. Therefore, consciousness is not the agent of anything. From the three conditions arises the substance called consciousness, and even without action, because it arises in the form of the object in which it arises, it is said that it cognizes, just as it is said that a shadow walks, just as it is said that a flame burns and walks. If it is said that those two have no action, but the action is that those who understand the arising of each object think that the shadow is walking, the flame is burning and walking, but consciousness has no function of thought. If it is said that this is not the same, then those who understand also say that it walks. Therefore, even without the function of thought, just as it is said that a shadow and a flame burn and walk, it is also reasonable to say that consciousness cognizes. If even so, that way of speaking is undefined, if it is said that like the definition arising from grammar (Sanskrit, Vyākaraṇa, व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa, grammar), consciousness arises in things, agents, and bases, then, in grammar, without fully understanding what is said and what is to be said, defining sounds, whose fault is that? Grammar is also a branch of knowledge, and knowledge itself
