How is this to be known? If so, it would be too extreme, like other tangibles, other forms, smells, tastes, and sounds, also arise because of encountering conditions, therefore it would be inferred that they already existed before being perceived. Other sutras also say that if a monk is a meditator and possesses magical powers, and is able to control his mind, then whatever element he likes in this tree trunk, it will become that element, and not others. Why? Because the sutra says that this tree trunk has various elements. Thus, if encountering the difference of conditions, hardness and so on will arise from their respective elements. These elements are not fragments either, because even for one part, it will completely change according to what is liked, and it is impossible for it to have countless parts. If the smell of earth is originally perceived, then by watering it, one can know that it will become moist. Whatever becomes moist by encountering conditions, hardness and so on that can be known, if there are no conditions, it will not be perceived in water and so on. Therefore, for the statement of being a lump, there is the same fault. If it is said to be from the genus, then all forms that are the cause, the four great elements will not become the cause, because it is not admitted that some great elements will arise from some combinations. This would contradict the sutra, because in the sutra of each birth place, it is said that each of the nine birth places is caused by the four great elements. Moreover, just like slapping with the palm, it is also said that there are four great elements in the lump of flesh of the eye. In short, reason here refers to the three kinds of valid cognition, namely direct perception, inference, and trustworthy teachings. It should be known that refuting a view that contradicts any of these is also refuting a view that contradicts reason. For example, monks, past form exists, future form exists, whatever is past, ceased, stopped, separated, and exhausted exists, this contradicts direct perception. Because the past and the future are inherently non-existent, this is obvious.

English

It is not. For example, like the hair of a tortoise. To say "the past is also the present" is contradictory. If it exists, how can it be past? The future is the same. In other sutras, it is said that when the eye arises, it does not come from anywhere; when it ceases, it does not go anywhere. Monks, in this way, the eye arises from the unarisen and perishes after arising. This contradicts that. To say that "the definite arising of forms is formlessness" contradicts inference. Because feelings and so on are seen to arise dependent on form. Similarly, the merit arising from generosity, as the basis of action, if constantly cultivated and repeatedly practiced, will achieve great enjoyment, which also contradicts inference. Because misers are rich and givers are poor are also common. Because misers themselves are rich and givers themselves are poor. Even if one is accustomed to generosity, one should not become a miser, and even if one is accustomed to generosity, one is not endowed with generosity. Similarly, to say that there is someone who has abandoned the connection to arising but has not abandoned the connection to manifest attainment also contradicts inference. If someone is free from desire for the existence in which they arise, then they are certainly free from desire for the intermediate state of existence as well. The five precepts of a layperson, if the meaning of each word is explained in detail, including the fault of drinking alcohol, contradicts the scriptures. Because there are four kinds of bodily misconduct, from killing to drinking intoxicating liquor, it is not said that misconduct includes these faults. Similarly, what is said to be the extremely extensive section is the Mahayana, which also contradicts the scriptures. Some say that the sutras with many chapters are the extremely extensive section, not the Mahayana. Why? Because that is not the word of the Buddha.
