Because desire is the cause of suffering. Non-aryas are those who are contrary to purification because they are the very ones whose virtuous dharma is completely lost. Those who are associated with meaningless things are in accordance with all defilements. The desires of ordinary people are impure, foul-smelling, stinking, and unpleasant. This is a passage from the Sutra Pitaka. Among them, the desires that are the basis of sexual intercourse are impure, because the body becomes defiled and needs to be washed. Foul-smelling because of the leakage of urine and feces. Stinking because its nature is flesh and blood, etc. Unpleasant because each substance is a source of nausea, and unpleasantness arises after engaging in sexual intercourse. Thus, through one or two words, the connection of desires, leakage, and the faults of one's own characteristics are fully revealed. Here also it is said: Thus desires are impure things, becoming dirt that needs to be washed, pus, urine, and feces are foul-smelling, stinking things are by nature, unpleasant things are different, therefore they are condemned, and after engaging in sexual activity, unpleasantness also arises. Furthermore, impurity is of two kinds: the impurity of pus and the impurity of affliction. As it is said: One should separately contemplate this body as being filled with various kinds of impure things. The impurity of affliction is as it is said: That which makes a person impure. Therefore, in order to correctly reveal one's own impurity, it is said "foul-smelling." In order to reveal the particularity of foul-smelling itself, it is said "stinking." Unpleasant things are as before. If one does not say impure, then the impurity of pus will not reveal the characteristic of foul-smelling. If one does not say foul-smelling, then stinking will not be condemned. In the scriptures, impurity has been revealed, and the remaining

This is the explanation. In short, desires are of two kinds: the desire for food and the desire for sex. As it is said in the Sutra of the Matted Hair, "Foods and drinks, and also tastes, women are desires, some die here because of them." It is like that. The desire for food, because it is completely transformed, has an unpleasant smell and a foul smell, because it turns into substances such as urine and feces, and substances such as meat. Sexual desire, because it is completely transformed, is discordant; if one is free from complete suffering, discord arises. The cause of desire and the basis of desire are fragments of the sutra. Among these, the afflictive desire is to be understood as twofold: aspiration and attachment. The basic desire is also twofold: attainment and non-attainment. Therefore, the cause of desire and the basis of desire are the two kinds of afflictive desire. Being subject to desire, and the cause of desires alone, refers to the two kinds of basic desire. Thus, it is fully shown what is the cause and for what the dispute is. Attachment, infatuation, entanglement, forgetting bonds, fainting, especially attachment, becoming especially infatuated, are fragments of the sutra. Because attachment gives rise to universal entanglement, because of accepting what has arisen, because of wanting to obtain and enjoy, because of repeatedly contemplating its means, because of not seeing the faults, because universal clinging arises on complete acceptance, because of the cause of dissatisfaction, the mind dwells many times by focusing on clinging to it, so it should be understood in order. Attachment to desire, and special infatuation, and complete bondage, and complete infatuation, and the cause of universal attachment, are fragments of the sutra. Universal enjoyment, and acceptance, and suppression, and not fearing it, and completely liking it, in order. Furthermore, one's own
