Third is the non-attainment of both, which is to strive for both. How is it done? Through the gate of hearing and holding, one strives for insight. With certainty as the forerunner, one strives for tranquility. Fourth is the attainment of both. What are the three faculties? The faculty of 'I will know what is not yet known,' the faculty of 'knowing,' and the faculty of 'having known.' What is the faculty of 'I will know what is not yet known?' It is that which has power over the fifteen moments of the mind on the path of application and the path of seeing. Here, the path of application is collected in accordance with the part that ascertains, and whatever has power over the fifteen moments of the mind on the path of seeing, such as the faculty of mind, the five faculties of faith and so on, and the absence of cowardice and so on, according to the differences of location, such as the faculty of pleasure, the faculty of mental pleasure, the faculty of mental displeasure, and the faculty of equanimity, whichever is appropriate. The faculty of mental displeasure is to be understood as being collected by the desire for supreme liberation, in accordance with the part that distinguishes the uncertain time of application. These are the ten faculties in existence. Because one has entered in order to know everything that was previously unknown, it is called the faculty of 'I will know what is not yet known.' What is the faculty of 'knowing'? Based on the sixteen moments of the mind on the path of seeing, it is that which has power over all the paths of learning. These ten faculties themselves, from the sixteenth moment of the mind on the path of seeing up to what is called the vajra-like samadhi, are called the faculty of 'knowing' on that path of learning, because there is nothing to be known that was not previously seen. What is the faculty of 'having known'? It is that which has power over the path of no-more-learning. Except for the faculty of mental displeasure, the nine faculties themselves are called the faculty of 'having known' on the path of no-more-learning. The faculty of 'having known' is because it is the faculty of an arhat. In the context of the path of cultivation, this should also be said: when cultivating the path of the first dhyana ground, one cultivates the roots of virtue that are very much associated with desire, and one obtains power over them.

Therefore. When the path of the first dhyana ground is realized and cultivated, then the roots of virtue of the lower grounds other than the realized one will be cultivated, because the mind can attain mastery over these. If one wishes to practice in the first dhyana ground, just as one wishes to practice, cultivating all the paths of the higher grounds, then one will cultivate the roots of virtue of the lower grounds, because one can attain mastery over them. As it is said, if one realizes and cultivates the path of the higher grounds, then one will cultivate the roots of virtue of the lower grounds other than the unrealized path, because one can attain mastery over them. Attaining mastery should be understood as being able to exercise mastery over the most fully realized things. What is the ultimate path? It is for cutting off all faults and attaining the attainments of separation. Relying on the vajra-like samadhi, one will immediately become non-aggregate, that is, knowing exhaustion and knowing non-arising. It is also the ten non-learning dharmas, that is, from the non-learning right view to the non-learning right samadhi, as well as the non-learning right liberation and the non-learning right knowledge. All faults, as well as the pervasive faults of manifestation, the faults of feeling, the faults of affliction, the faults of karma, the faults of maturation, the faults of the obscuration of affliction, the faults of the obscuration of karma, the faults of the obscuration of maturation, the faults of obscuration, the faults of discrimination, the faults of food, the faults of lust, the faults of dreams, the faults of disease, the faults of old age, the faults of death, the faults of complete fatigue, the faults of steadfastness, the faults of greatness, the faults of mediocrity, the faults of smallness, the faults of the obscuration of affliction, the faults of the obscuration of equipoise, the faults of the obscuration of knowledge. These faults are twenty-four in number, among which the pervasive faults of manifestation are:
