The third is the (path) for those with dull faculties to attain actual meditative concentration. The fourth is the (path) for those with sharp faculties to attain actual meditative concentration. Among these, the difficult path is that there is nothing that cannot be overcome, and it relies on the formless realms, because, in order, calm abiding (shamatha) and insight (vipashyana) are weak. The easy path is that it relies on meditative concentration, because it engages in union. Slow direct perception is these two situations of difficulty and ease, which are characteristics of those with dull faculties. Quick direct perception relies on this (easy path), which is a characteristic of those with sharp faculties. What are the four abodes of dharma? Non-covetousness, non-harmfulness, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Among these, non-covetousness and non-harmfulness are higher discipline, in order to purify the trainings so that the places of training are not lost through subsequent attachment and anger. Right mindfulness is higher mind, because if the object is not forgotten, it is for the sake of placing the mind evenly. Right concentration is higher wisdom, because from placing the mind evenly, it is for the sake of knowing things as they truly are. What is calm abiding (shamatha)? It is like this: placing the mind on the inner self, continuously placing it, returning and placing it, closely placing it, taming it, pacifying it, completely pacifying it, making it one-pointed, and placing it evenly. Calm abiding is the nine modes of abiding of the mind, that is, gathering from external objects and not being distracted inward, initially bringing the mind close is placing. Thus, the gross movement of the mind, initially bringing it close, focusing on that object in a continuous manner and in a subtle manner, is continuously placing. If mindfulness is forgotten and becomes distracted outward, drawing it back with mindfulness is returning and placing. In order not to let the mind scatter outward, initially establishing mindfulness closely is closely placing. As before, for the causes of scattering, such as forms, focusing on the consciousness of the object, initially not allowing the mind to scatter completely is taming. The afflictions that disturb the mind

Not giving opportunity to various conceptualizations is pacification. Because of forgetting mindfulness, various conceptualizations and so on arise, not accepting them is extreme pacification. Continuously focusing on samadhi without interruption is making it one-pointed. Through extreme habituation, without intentional effort, naturally, the continuity of the mind's samadhi arises without distraction, which is equal abiding. What is vipashyana? It is discriminating dharmas, thoroughly discriminating, completely understanding, completely observing. Here, conduct is focusing on various conducts, or focusing on the wise, or focusing on various subduings of afflictions, in whatever way, discriminating in what way, and thoroughly discriminating as it truly exists. The mental activity associated with conceptualization, accompanied by wisdom, is complete conceptualization characterized by signs. Universal understanding is complete observation. It is for the sake of liberating from bad situations, the antidote to signs, and inversion, and placing the mind in what is not inverted. Furthermore, relying on shamatha and vipashyana, it will transform into four paths. Some have attained shamatha but have not attained vipashyana, therefore, they rely on shamatha and strive to practice vipashyana. Some have attained vipashyana but have not attained shamatha, therefore, they rely on vipashyana and strive to practice shamatha. Some have neither attained shamatha nor attained vipashyana, therefore, they strive to practice both with a mind that subdues the scattering of dharmas. Some have attained both shamatha and vipashyana, therefore, shamatha and vipashyana merge, attaining union. This is from the perspective of showing the four paths. Among them, the first is, in order to attain shamatha, continuously abide until the mind abides; because vipashyana has not been attained, therefore relying on that samadhi, later abide in that way, from discriminating these dharmas up to completely observing. The second situation should be understood as the opposite of this.
