To pacify, to gather, to obtain, these are synonymous terms. The samadhi of investigation is, to hold the mind completely, which means, to make the mind blaze through the gateway of vipassana, these are synonymous terms. What is meditation? To become accustomed to the eight aspects of abandonment, the eight aspects of abandonment are: desire, effort, faith, extreme pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Although these eight are determined, they can be summarized into four: effort, benefit, closeness, and antidote. Among these, desire is the basis of effort. The cause of desire is faith, just as, if someone strives for some purpose, it is to strive to obtain it. If one does not believe in its existence, etc., one will not strive for that purpose. Benefit is extreme pliancy, because it benefits body and mind. Closeness is mindfulness and awareness, not forgetting the object, entering into one-pointedness of mind, and if the object is without self, in order to completely cut it off, this is said in order. The antidote is attention and equanimity. Holding the mind completely and abiding completely, through the manifestation of appearances, dullness and agitation, arising and complete abandonment, and without affliction, is to follow the signs of tranquility, etc. Furthermore, through desire, diligence, attention, and investigation, to gather, to completely abandon agitation and its root, without discouragement, without agitation, and to meditate on the place and conformity of these two. Furthermore, through desire, etc., to gather, to meditate on completely abandoning agitation and its root, etc., wherein the basis of gathering is the lack of vipassana, therefore one will become dull through laziness. The basis of agitation is the lack of the perception of ugliness, therefore one will not correctly grasp through agitation. Gathering is to be discouraged inwardly through dullness and sleep. Agitation is to scatter to various objects by following the signs of loveliness. To meditate on being without discouragement and in accordance, is to rely on the signs of individual discrimination, to perform various

To observe. That which is in accordance with non-distraction is to individually recognize the impurity of objects such as sound. That which is in accordance with the place of both of these is the perception of appearance. Furthermore, one's intention should not become too weak, nor too strongly grasped, nor gathered inward, nor scattered outward, and one should think of the perception of the past and future, and the perception of above and below. Thus, one should meditate on the mind endowed with appearance, without the mind being entangled by discriminations. One should not transform one's mind into a state of having intention. Having made such an intention, the Bhagavan spoke in order. What is the result? Having thus well-trained in samadhi, whatever dharma one wishes to directly know, and to that, directing the mind directly. Those dharmas of their own place will become capable of direct realization. In order to accomplish qualities such as miracles as desired. The objects of the faculties are the four noble truths. Because the four truths are realized through the aggregation of practice, it is a transformation of that. What is the nature? Faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom. What is the retinue? The mind and mental factors that are in accordance with those. What is the meditation? The faculty of faith is cultivated by means of the aspect of believing in the truths. Those who have faith are cultivated with diligence in order to realize the truths, by means of the aspect of elaboration. Diligence, the diligent one, is cultivated by means of the aspect of not forgetting the mindfulness that abides near the truths. The samadhi that abides near the truths is cultivated by means of the aspect of one-pointedness of mind. The wisdom that abides equally in the truths is cultivated by means of the aspect of thoroughly discriminating. What is the result? It quickly realizes the truths, and by that power, without delay, the path of seeing arises, as well as the heat, the peak, the forbearance, and the supreme mundane dharma.

It is practice. At that time, it is the continuum of mind that relies on being in accordance with the aspect of determination. Just as with the faculties, so too with the powers. This is the distinction: because the opposing side is definitely weakened, the powers are not overcome. The objects and so forth of the powers are in accordance with the faculties. There is a distinction in the result. Thus, these are the result, as it is said, because the opposing side, such as lack of faith, is weakened, it is especially firm. Therefore, although the objects and nature, etc., of these are in accordance, the aspect of enlightenment, which is the distinction of the meaning of not being overcome, is something else. What is the object of the limbs of enlightenment? It is the suchness of the four noble truths. It is a synonym called the object of ultimate purity. What is the nature? Mindfulness, discrimination of phenomena, diligence, joy, pliancy, samadhi, and equanimity. Among these, mindfulness is the limb of the place. Mindfulness is the establishment because all virtuous dharmas are perfected. Discrimination of phenomena is the limb of the nature. Because it is the characteristic of enlightenment. Diligence is the limb of definite emergence. Because it goes as far as it goes. Joy is the limb of benefit. Because it satisfies the continuum of mind. Pliancy, samadhi, and equanimity are the limbs of non-affliction, which are not afflicted by anything, not afflicted in anything, and without any affliction. Among these, pliancy is not afflicted, because it destroys bad places. In samadhi, one is not afflicted, because abiding in it is a transformation of abiding. Equanimity is without affliction, because it is the nature of a non-afflicted state, being free from greed and displeasure. What are the companions? Mind and mental factors that are similarly associated with them. What is meditation?
