What causes one to enter into absorption in the realm of form? Is it not the case that all those who enter into absorption in the formless, peaceful liberation are free from desire for form? Regarding this, there are four possibilities: One is free from desire for form by relying on the invincible, but has not attained peaceful liberation; this is the first possibility. A noble one who has attained the fourth dhyana, not seeking rebirth in the formless realm, abandons the path of abandonment and abides in a superior path, thereby entering into absorption in the formless, peaceful liberation; this is the second possibility. That same person seeks to be free from desire and abides in the path of abandonment, thereby entering into absorption in the formless, peaceful liberation; this is the third possibility. Anything other than these is the fourth possibility. Why do those born in the formless realm not become manifest? Because the realms that desire to abide in peace are manifestly accomplished and made manifest among humans. Those born in the formless realm, without needing to be obscured, abide in the supreme peace that arises from maturation, in liberation; therefore, they do not strive to make it manifest. The small path, the medium of the small, and the great of the small: by these, of the afflictions to be cultivated in the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm, the great of the great afflictions, the medium of the great, and the small of the great are abandoned. What is the medium path? The small of the medium, the medium of the medium, and the great of the medium: by these, of the afflictions that are practiced in the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm, the great of the medium afflictions, the medium of the medium, and the small of the medium are abandoned. What is the great path? The small of the great, the medium of the great, and the great of the great: by these, of the afflictions that are practiced in the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm, the great of the small afflictions, the medium of the small, and the small of the small are abandoned. The small path, the medium path, and the great path are each divided into three types, such as small, medium, and great, and are classified into nine types, in order to show that those to be abandoned through cultivation are abandoned sequentially. Why?

If it is said that great afflictions are abandoned when one is young, it is because shame and embarrassment, as well as extremely dissolute and unreserved thoughts, arise universally in the mindstream. Therefore, it is easy to recognize and completely cut off. So, it is like a huge stain that can be removed with a small antidote. Furthermore, it is difficult to completely cut off, arises universally and is subtle, and the smallest of the small afflictions that cling to the continuum, like a tiny stain, must be removed with the power of a great antidote. Therefore, starting from the aspect that is contrary to the unfavorable aspects, one must recognize that one must establish oneself in the aspect of the antidote. What is the path of application? It is that by which afflictions are abandoned. By cultivating which path can one gradually transform, thereby moving away from each part of the unfavorable situation corresponding to the categories of afflictions such as the greatest of the great afflictions? The path of cultivation is called the path of application. What is the path of immediate result? Below it, afflictions can be abandoned without interruption. Below it, in order to move away from all the unfavorable situations corresponding to the categories of afflictions, so that these unfavorable situations are transformed, this is the path of immediate result. What is the path of liberation? It is that by which afflictions are abandoned, thereby realizing liberation. Relying on it to realize transformation, this is its definition. What is the superior path? It is the path of application, the path of immediate result, and the path of liberation, which are different from the category of afflictions. Below it, the path of application, the path of immediate result, and the path of liberation that eliminate the remaining afflictions are explained. Furthermore, after the path of application for abandoning afflictions has been excluded, what is the superior path of contemplating the Dharma, or abiding in the Dharma that has been entered, or of meditative absorption? Another way of saying it is that the realm with special qualities eliminates the path of application for abandoning afflictions itself, which means abandonment. Contemplating the Dharma of scriptures, etc., or what was previously contemplated, the abiding of separate observation of the Dharma that has been understood, or the path of meditative absorption immediately following meditative absorption, is also called the superior path here. Furthermore, the path of abiding that realizes superior qualities
