Those without are the three types other than the limbs. How are the limbs established? The first dhyana has five limbs. The five limbs are: vitarka (寻,梵文:vitarka,罗马:vitarka,汉语:寻), vicara (伺,梵文:vicāra,罗马:vicāra,汉语:伺), joy (喜,梵文:prīti,罗马:prīti,汉语:喜), happiness (乐,梵文:sukha,罗马:sukha,汉语:乐), and one-pointedness of mind. The second dhyana also has four limbs. The four limbs are: inner clarity, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The third dhyana also has five limbs. The five limbs are: equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth dhyana also has four limbs. The four limbs are: complete purity of equanimity, complete purity of mindfulness, the feeling of neither suffering nor happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. By what power are only vitarka etc. definitively established, even though other dharmas also exist? Because only that much of the antidote, benefit, and the limb of the place of those two are complete. Thus it is said, because of the limb of the antidote, the limb of the benefit, and the limb of the place of those two. In the first dhyana, vitarka and vicara are the limbs of the antidote, because they abandon the discrimination of desire, malice, harm, etc. Joy and happiness are the limbs of benefit, because they obtain the joy and happiness born from being separated from the opposing side that has been made an antidote by the two, vitarka and vicara. One-pointedness of mind is the limb of the place of those two, because by the power relying on samadhi, it enters into vitarka etc. Likewise, in the second dhyana, inner clarity is the limb of the antidote, because it acts as an antidote to vitarka and vicara. Joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind are like the former for the remaining two limbs. In the third dhyana, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness are the limbs of the antidote, because they act as an antidote to joy. Happiness and one-pointedness of mind are like the remaining two limbs and the order. In the fourth dhyana, complete purity of equanimity and complete purity of mindfulness are the limbs of the antidote. Those two are of happiness.

It is for the sake of caution. Neither suffering nor happiness is a branch of benefit. Single-pointedness of mind is a branch of the abode of both. The formless realms, because they have the same taste in quiescence, have no established branches. How is absorption established? With seven types of attention, one enters the first dhyana, and so on up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. What are the seven types of attention? The attention of thoroughly understanding characteristics, and that arising from aspiration, and that arising from extreme solitude, and gathering joy, and investigation, and the edge of union and the attention to the fruit of the edge of union. How do they become the seven types of attention that enter the first dhyana? With the attention of equanimity, looking at the faults of desires, etc., because there is no knowing of the coarse characteristics. For the first dhyana, thoroughly understanding the characteristic of peace is called the attention of thoroughly understanding characteristics, and it should be known that it is a mixture of hearing and thinking. After that, transcending hearing and thinking, in a manner of meditating as one, meditating on quiescence and insight, focusing on the reason and the sign of the characteristic of peace, and again and again how to fully seek coarseness and peace itself, believing: this is called arising from aspiration. Because of habituation, the attention that initially possesses the path of abandonment alone arises from extreme solitude, because he also abandons most of the afflictions, being separated from the bad destinations of that side. The yogi then becomes happy with abandonment, and sees abandonment as beneficial, because of the joy of extreme solitude and the touch of small happiness, and the attention that generates faith from time to time, whenever he is freed from dullness, sleep, and agitation, so he is extremely joyful, this is called gathering joy. Being well entered in that way is because he has the union with virtue. Because the joy and happiness of afflictions practiced in the desire realm do not arise universally, he understands that unabandoned place of abandonment.

This is for the sake of 'ra', because taking the characteristic of suffering that comes with birth as what is to be done, individual understanding is the attention of discernment. Therefore, having discerned in this way and cultivated the antidote, in such a way as to be like that time, in order to separate from all the afflictions that correspond to desire. The ultimate antidote attention of the union of the first dhyana is the limit of union. After that, actually abiding in the first dhyana, this is called the fruit of the limit of union. Regarding this, by fully knowing the characteristics, it has been abandoned, and after knowing well what should be obtained, the mind abides for the sake of abandoning and obtaining. Born from faith, after that, truly initiate union. Born from extreme solitude, then extremely abandon all great afflictions. Gathering joy, then extremely abandon intermediate afflictions. By conduct, the mind abides from the absence of manifest pride of attainment. The limit of union, then extremely abandon subtle afflictions. The fruit of the limit of union, then experience the fruit of well-cultivated attention. In order to abide in the first dhyana, how are the seven attentions, similarly, in order to abide between the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, how should they be combined accordingly. The characteristic of coarseness is all the lower grounds, up to the realm of nothingness. In short, it should be known as two types, because it remains without being completely pacified, therefore it is in extreme suffering, and it is extremely short-lived. Conversely, for the upper grounds, it should be known as the characteristic of peace. How to establish the measure, such as small cultivation, medium cultivation, and large cultivation in the first dhyana. How is it in the first dhyana, the remaining dhyanas and the formless realms are also the same. The fruit of small, medium, and large cultivation in the first dhyana is the three births of the first dhyana. How is it in the first dhyana, the remaining dhyanas are also the same, the birth of dhyana
