Three and three. The meditations are small, medium, and large, for the sake of complete cultivation. Each meditation has three births as its fruit, such as the retinue of Brahma, Brahma's frontal recitation, Great Brahma, and so on, as described above. The formless realms have no different births because there is no other place. Because there is no other place for the immeasurable palace in those realms. Therefore, there is no distinction of births established there. There, by cultivating small, medium, and large, one can know that in the formless realms there are high, low, inferior, and superior births. There, high and low births are differences in lifespan and so on. Inferior and superior are differences in the abundance of afflictions and non-afflictions. How are names established? How many concentrations are included in the first dhyana? Even the names of those concentrations that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas enter into are not known by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The names of the various divisions of the four dhyanas are countless and inconceivable. Just as the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not know the names of those concentrations that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and the Bodhisattvas who have attained great power enter into, how can they know their number or see their absorption? Just as the Prajnaparamita teaches more than a hundred concentrations, so too do other Mahayana sutras. Just as the first dhyana is included, so are the remaining dhyanas and those included in the formless realms. That is based on the Paramita of Dhyana. How is purity? From the first dhyana arising from the highest point to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, it is called purity. The dhyana and formless realms arising from the highest point are called purity, manifesting special qualities.

It is for the sake of practice. It is to guide the attainment of wishes and so on, to the point of being supremely capable. What is the path that transcends the world? It refers to suffering, origin, cessation, and path in the path of meditation, as well as the dharmas of knowledge of dharma and subsequent realization. These are also eight, referring to the eight knowledges of dharma and subsequent realization regarding suffering and so on. Thus, they are based on the path of seeing. The samadhi that corresponds to these, from the first dhyana up to the sphere of nothingness. The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is worldly because the activity of consciousness is not very clear. Because the activity of consciousness is not very clear, it is not a place where the activity of the noble path is supremely clear. Therefore, it should be known that it alone is worldly. Therefore, because that consciousness is weak, it does not make an object of focus. Therefore, it is said to be without characteristics. How is it known that there is no noble path in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception? The Blessed One said, "As long as there is absorption of consciousness, so long there is realization of omniscience." The absorption of cessation is transcendent of the world. Why? Because it is obtained after the noble path. It is the manifest attainment for people. It is a synonym for "first arising." After manifesting accomplishment for people, it manifests to people or in the realm of form. Having arisen previously, that life is among people, or having been born in the realm of form, it manifests. In the formless realms, this does not manifest, because those who abide in the ripened result of peaceful liberation have no effort in that. Therefore, the noble hearer is free from desire for the realm of form, and having attained the formless, how is he born in the realm of form? It is said that only those who are free from desire for the realm of form do not enter into the samadhi of the formless. Therefore, it becomes four sentences, saying that those who are free from desire for form, all of them are formless and peaceful.
