It is gathered by the vows of discipline, and gathered by the vows without outflows. What is the action of the Pratimoksha vow? There are eight kinds, namely: the vow of a Bhikshu, the vow of a Bhikshuni, the vow of a Shikshamana, the vow of a Shramanera, the vow of a Shramanerika, the vow of a Upasaka, the vow of a Upasika, and the vow of Uposatha. Upon what kind of person is the ordination vow established? It is established upon those who practice apart from misconduct and those who practice apart from desire. There are five kinds of ordination vows, from the vow of a Bhikshuni to the vow of a Shramanera. It is established based on the person who practices apart from misconduct and practices apart from desire. For example, such a person is for the sake of abandoning misconduct such as killing, and abandoning non-celibacy for as long as life lasts. Upon what kind of person are the vows of Upasaka and Upasika established? It is one who practices apart from misconduct, but not one who practices apart from desire. Therefore, this vow is established as abandoning wrong sexual conduct with desire for as long as life lasts, but not abandoning non-celibacy. Upon what kind of person is the Uposatha vow established? It is neither one who practices apart from misconduct nor one who practices apart from desire. Therefore, this vow is considered as the Uposatha vow for one day and night, gradually for the sake of practicing both of those and so on. If an Upasaka learns one aspect of the basis of training, should it be understood that he possesses the vow of an Upasaka, or should it be understood that he does not possess it? It should also be understood that he possesses it, but it should also be called the basis for breaking the precepts. Is the vow of an Upasaka forbidden for hermaphrodites and eunuchs? The vow of an Upasaka is not forbidden. It is the Upasaka himself who is forbidden, because they are not suitable to rely on both the Bhikshu and Bhikshuni sides to serve and respect. Just as hermaphrodites and eunuchs are not suitable to serve and respect both the Bhikshu and Bhikshuni sides,

Since the Upavāsa is a prohibition, so are those with two names. Because the afflictions of men and women are universally practiced, neither side should be served or honored, therefore they are not explained separately. There are five types of eunuchs: those born as eunuchs, jealous eunuchs, half-month eunuchs, castrated eunuchs, and diminished eunuchs. What is the discipline of meditation? Arising from wrong livelihood, at the time of destroying the seeds of afflictions, what is the abandonment of desire with detachment from desire? And detachment from desire in the first dhyana, detachment from desire in the second dhyana, detachment from desire in the third dhyana, what is abandonment? For those arising from wrong livelihood, with attachment and so on, the afflictions and near afflictions practiced in desire, by the antidote that suppresses them, destroying the seeds, thereby abandoning wrong livelihood with detachment from desires, what is that? In between the third dhyana, by the antidote of cultivating detachment for a long time, for the arising of wrong livelihood, know that by those antidotes, the seeds can be extremely destroyed. For detachment from desire in the fourth dhyana, because there is no form in the formless realms, know that there is no establishment of the discipline of precepts. What is the undefiled discipline? It is what is abandoned by the undefiled attention that sees the truth. What is non-discipline? Non-discipline is the butcher, and the bird-killer, the pig-raiser, the fisherman, the hunter, the bird-catcher, the rabbit releaser, the stealer of Dharma objects, the executioner, the elephant trainer, the snake charmer, the diligent guard, the eavesdropper, and any of those who cause harm. Those that arise from karma or are properly taken, it has been determined that those are the actions to be practiced. Butchers are those who kill livestock for a living. Bird-killers are the same, how should they be matched accordingly. Elephant trainers are those who capture elephants from the forest and tame them. Snake charmers are those
