It exists in the same way as the aggregates that are not consciousness. Pride and so on exist in the same way as the aggregates of mental consciousness, because they arise from the door of complete measurement and so on. Desire, anger, and pride are engaged with one aspect of things in the desire realm. Just as in the desire realm, so too in the form realm and the formless realm. Pride is also only engaged with one aspect, because it will be filled with any limb whatsoever. The remaining ones are engaged with all things in all places. What is the nature of the categories? There are two categories of afflictions: those to be abandoned by seeing and those to be abandoned by meditation. In the desire realm, there are ten things to be abandoned by seeing suffering. Just as what is to be abandoned by seeing suffering, so too are what is to be abandoned by seeing the origin, cessation, and path. Among them, in the desire realm, the ten things to be abandoned by seeing suffering are those who wrongly conceive of its cause and basis. Similarly, the origin and so on are also wrongly conceived of as appropriate, and that is what is to be abandoned by seeing. Why should one know that those who, when they perceive something, wrongly conceive of it? Because the object of the uncontaminated is not something that can be taken away, but the object of the contaminated is something that can be increased. In the form realm, there are nine things to be abandoned by seeing suffering. There, those who wrongly conceive of its cause and basis are to be abandoned by seeing suffering. Just as what is to be abandoned by seeing suffering, so too are what is to be abandoned by seeing the origin, cessation, and path. Because there is no anger there. Just as in the form realm, so too in the formless realm. Those, in short, eighty-two afflictions are the category of afflictions to be abandoned by seeing. In the desire realm, there are six things to be abandoned by meditation: the view of the aggregates as a self, the co-emergent view of clinging to extremes, desire, anger, pride, and ignorance. Among them, in the corruptible collection

The co-emergent ones are to be abandoned by cultivation. Although the path of seeing has been attained, pride arises in the noble Hearers based on the thought 'I am' (ahaṃ-māna). As it is said: 'The venerable one, the servant, does not see these five aggregates of clinging as self or belonging to self, but the pride of 'I am' (ahaṃ-māna), the desire of 'I am' (ahaṃ-chanda), and the latent tendencies of 'I am' (ahaṃ-anusaya) have not been abandoned, not fully known, not prevented, not made endless.' It is like this. For example, if a mother's garment becomes stained, the son washes it well with a pestle, etc., and although it becomes spotless, the habit of the stain remains because of attachment to it. It must be removed again by perfuming it with a fragrant scent. Similarly, even for the noble Hearers who have abandoned the stain of the conceptually imputed view of the aggregates with the path of seeing, they still cling to what was previously manifested. Following the view of self that has been accustomed to and not examined, that is what must be abandoned by the path of cultivation. The co-emergent view of holding to extremes should be understood as included in the view of annihilation, because it causes complete aversion to the question of what self is. It causes the mind to turn away from liberation. Other than those that are in accordance with the side of views, attachment and so on are to be abandoned by cultivation. In the form realm, there are five belonging to anger. Just as in the form realm, so too in the formless realm. These, when summarized, are sixteen, which are the categories of afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation. How does one abandon, how does one abandon, what kind of attention, and what is abandoned from what? How does one abandon? By complete knowledge, by complete abandonment, and by obtaining the antidote. What is known by complete knowledge? The basis of that, the nature of that, and the faults of that are completely known. Among these, 'completely knowing the basis of that' means, for example, 'the latent tendencies of the afflictions have not been abandoned.' Completely knowing the nature means that afflictions that are the nature of the mind being completely afflicted arise. Completely knowing the faults means harming oneself, etc.
