Therefore, it is associated with mental ease and equanimity. The first and second dhyanas are associated with happiness, mental ease, and equanimity. The third dhyana is associated with happiness and equanimity. That is also absolutely associated with equanimity alone. Pride is not associated with happiness in the desire realm, because it is not associated with the five aggregates of consciousness. How is happiness associated with the first and second dhyanas? It is associated with the happiness of the mental sphere. So, what is the happiness of the mental sphere like? It is what arises as joy and happiness. As it is said in the scriptures, what is purity? It is the mental satisfaction, extreme joy, delight, happiness, and experience of happiness that arise from relying on the entering consciousness that has undergone transformation of abiding. It belongs to feeling. What is happiness? It is the benefit to abiding, satisfaction of abiding, and experience of happiness that arise from relying on the receptive consciousness that has undergone transformation of abiding. It belongs to feeling, as it is said. Here, "relying on the entering consciousness" means relying on the mental consciousness, because there is no equal abiding with others. When the feeling of happiness arises in the first and second dhyanas, with which mental and mental factors is it associated? Those factors satisfy it with the aspect of joy, and satisfy it with the happiness of the extremely tamed nature of the abiding receptive consciousness. Therefore, in order to perform the function of both of these, it should be understood that what is called joy and happiness is established in two forms. Therefore, pride that is associated with this is called being associated with happiness. Just like pride, the view of the aggregates of destruction, the view of clinging to extremes, the view of holding views as supreme, and the view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme are also the same. Wrong view is associated with mental ease, mental unease, and equanimity in the desire realm. In the form and formless realms, it is associated with whatever feelings exist. Wrong view is associated with mental ease and mental

What is happiness, and how does it coincide and coexist? Those who commit sins, seeing that there is no consequence, thus generate faith and joy. Happiness and suffering do not coincide and coexist, because all views are not objects of the mind. Doubt in the desire realm coincides and coexists with displeasure and equanimity. In the form and formless realms, whatever feeling there is, it coincides and coexists with that. Doubt in the desire realm also does not coincide with pleasure, because the uncertain mind lacks faith and joy, and therefore there is no pleasure in the mind. In the form realm, for those meditators whose doubt is intense, their joy and pleasure arise following the increase of the power of samadhi. There, it also coincides and coexists with pleasure and mental pleasure. Ignorance coincides and coexists with all afflictions. Wherever there is whatever feeling, it should be known that it coincides and coexists with that. Furthermore, unmixed ignorance in the desire realm coincides and coexists with displeasure and equanimity. From there upwards, whatever feeling there is, it coincides and coexists with that. Unmixed ignorance does not coincide and coexist with pleasure and mental pleasure. One should examine the reasoning of doubt based on non-coincidence. Why do all afflictions coincide with equanimity? Because they gradually diminish by relying on the ordinary. The stream of afflictions gradually becomes smaller and weaker, and is cut off by the force of cutting off the stream. Ultimately, it should be known that it coincides and coexists with equanimity by not forcing and abiding in the ordinary way. Attachment in the desire realm coincides and coexists with the six aggregates of consciousness. Just as with attachment, so too are anger and ignorance. In the form realm, it coincides with the four aggregates of consciousness, because there is no nose consciousness or tongue consciousness there. In the formless realm, it coincides and coexists with the aggregate of mental consciousness. Just as with attachment, so too is ignorance. Pride, views, and doubt all coincide and coexist with the aggregate of mental consciousness.
