Regret is because both calm abiding and grasping are disheartened as before, and cause distraction. Doubt is equanimity, because one cannot be equanimous without abandoning. There are three stains: the stain of desire, the stain of hatred, and the stain of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, one engages in desire and so on in the manner of previous habits. Because that behavior is not abandoned, the mind becomes unsuitable and difficult to separate from, those are called stains. Because it is difficult to plow away with the plow of antidotes, one should understand the classification of stains. Because one has become accustomed to it in other lifetimes, behavior becomes a stain. There are three impurities: the impurity of desire, the impurity of hatred, and the impurity of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, one especially engages in the immoral conduct whose essence is depraved. Whether one lives in a village or in a monastery, if one practices celibacy, if the wise see it, they will say, "This fortunate one does this, practices this," and will be called an impure village woman, those are called impurities. Because immoral conduct is the cause of arising as impure, they are impurities. There are three sins: the sin of desire, the sin of hatred, and the sin of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, one experiences birth, aging, and death for a long time, those are called sins. Again and again, being born in samsara, aging and death harm in that way, so they are sins. There are three thorns: the thorn of desire, the thorn of hatred, and the thorn of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, intense desire arises and abides for existence and the requisites of existence, and one doubts the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as suffering, origin, cessation, and path, those are called thorns. Existence and the

And those who act, harming the Buddhas by entering through the gate of existence and doubt, therefore are thorns. The "nothing" is threefold: the "nothing" of desire, the "nothing" of hatred, and the "nothing" of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, accompanied by fear, accompanied by animosity, and dwelling in much distraction, these are called "nothing." Holding many possessions, acting with "nothing" combined, applying to destruction and so forth, therefore are "nothing." Misconduct is threefold: misconduct of desire, of hatred, and of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, misconduct of body, speech, and mind are called misconduct. In order to engage in non-virtue such as killing, desire, hatred, and ignorance are established as misconduct, and through them, misconduct is committed. Furthermore, for the sake of small wealth and seeking enjoyment, one engages in the misconduct of desire. The cause of completely distinguishing from the cause of harm, and what others cannot tolerate, one engages in the misconduct of hatred. With the cause of wrongly clinging to the Dharma, viewing offerings and so forth in a perverted way, one engages in the misconduct of ignorance. Sentient beings engage in misconduct. Therefore, these are called the roots of misconduct of desire, hatred, and ignorance. Leakage is threefold: leakage of desire, leakage of existence, and leakage of ignorance. The mind leaks in a scattered way, leaking by looking outward, therefore it is leakage of desire. Leaking by looking inward, therefore it is leakage of existence. Leakage is the place of both, therefore it is leakage of ignorance. The mind leaks in a scattered way, therefore they are leakages. Poverty is threefold: poverty of desire, poverty of hatred, and poverty of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, with the possessions of existence, being harmed by the poverty of desire, those are poverty.
