Merely relying on the light of the sun will not lead to perfection. Not being adept at making offerings to the Buddhas, one engages in unwholesome deeds and does not practice virtue. Because suffering will manifest in the next life, it is connected to suffering. What is the pervasive activity of jealousy? Being particularly attached to gain and respect, one cannot bear the perfections of others, and the mind is disturbed from within. To possess the pervasive activity of jealousy is to cherish gain and respect, but not to cherish the Dharma. Because one cherishes gain and respect, one engages in unwholesome deeds and does not practice virtue, and because suffering will manifest in the next life, it is connected to suffering. What is the pervasive activity of miserliness? Being particularly attached to gain and respect, the mind clings to possessions. To possess the pervasive activity of miserliness is to cherish hoarding, but not to cherish giving away possessions, and because one cherishes hoarding, one engages in unwholesome deeds and does not practice virtue. Because suffering will manifest in the next life, it is connected to suffering. There are three bonds: the bond of desire, the bond of hatred, and the bond of ignorance. The bond of desire binds one to the suffering of change. The bond of hatred binds one to the suffering of suffering. The bond of ignorance binds one to the suffering of conditioning. Showing that being bound by the bonds of desire, etc., binds one to the suffering of change, etc., is because desire, etc., subtly increase feelings of pleasure, etc. Furthermore, relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, one cannot achieve what one wishes when engaging in virtuous deeds, therefore they are also bonds. Bound by external bonds, one cannot obtain two things: one cannot walk, and even when sitting, one cannot do as one pleases, and one cannot do as one wishes in thought and action. The internal bonds of desire, etc., should also be understood to be similar. There are seven latent tendencies: the latent tendency of desire for desire,

The latent tendencies of anger, as well as the latent tendencies of desire for existence, the latent tendencies of pride, the latent tendencies of ignorance, the latent tendencies of views, and the latent tendencies of doubt. The latent tendency of desire for desire refers to the places and misdeeds that are in accordance with the aspect of desire for desire. The latent tendency of anger refers to the places and misdeeds that are in accordance with the aspect of anger. The latent tendency of desire for existence refers to the places and misdeeds that are in accordance with the aspect of desire for form and formless realms. The latent tendency of pride refers to the places and misdeeds that are in accordance with the aspect of pride. The latent tendency of ignorance refers to the places and misdeeds that are in accordance with the aspect of ignorance. The latent tendency of views refers to the places and misdeeds that are in accordance with the aspect of views. The latent tendency of doubt refers to the places and misdeeds that are in accordance with the aspect of doubt. Because of not abandoning the search for desire, the latent tendency of desire for desire, as well as the latent tendency of anger, will increase. The latent tendencies of desire and anger will become subtle and increase from desire that has not abandoned the search for desire, because through them, these two will increase. Because of not abandoning the search for existence, the latent tendency of desire for existence will increase. Because of not abandoning wrong conduct, the latent tendency of pride, the latent tendency of ignorance, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt will increase, just as these will be satisfied even by a small worldly remedy. One will also become ignorant of the truths. One will also discriminate between wrong liberation and the means of liberation. One will have doubts about the teachings of the Buddhas, the sacred Dharma and Vinaya. One will have doubts. Discriminating between wrong liberation and the means of liberation refers to the order of the three views and two attachments as previously described in the universal combination. What are the near afflictions? Whatever are afflictions, those are also near afflictions. There are those that are near afflictions, but are not afflictions. Other than afflictions, the aggregate of formations arising from the mind is afflicted. It should be understood as anger and so on. Also, desire is a near affliction arising from the mind...

are afflictions. The near afflictions arising from the mind of hatred and ignorance, when the near afflictions make the mind afflicted, it will not be separated from attachment, it will not be liberated, because that obscuration has not been abandoned. As the Blessed One said: 'That mind has been completely defiled by desire for a long time, and has been completely defiled by hatred and ignorance.' It's like that. The pervasive entanglements are eight: lethargy, sleep, excitement, regret, jealousy, stinginess, shamelessness, and lack of embarrassment. During the time of calming abiding, during the time of superior seeing, during the time of meditating on the sign of equanimity, and during the time of the first purification of those bases, repeatedly and more strongly clinging to the mind, these are the pervasive entanglements. In order to obstruct the virtuous aspects of the yogis, repeatedly and more strongly clinging to the mind, therefore they are pervasive entanglements. The virtuous aspects are calming abiding, superior seeing, and meditating on the cause of equanimity, as the time is. Those bases are the precepts gathered from celibacy and so on. Among them, during the time of calming abiding, lethargy and sleep cause obstacles, because they cause the mind to be depressed. During the time of superior seeing, excitement and regret cause obstacles, because they cause external distraction. During the time of equanimity, jealousy and stinginess cause obstacles, because having these, one cannot tolerate the perfections of others, and repeatedly shakes the mind from the perspective of universal attachment. During the time of pure precepts, shamelessness and lack of embarrassment cause obstacles, because having these two, one will not be afraid of all places of downfall. There are four rivers: the river of desire, the river of existence, the river of views, and the river of ignorance. Because they carry towards the direction of continuity, they are rivers. In order to be compatible and incompatible with pervasive defilement and purification, it should be understood that the rivers and combinations are established in order. Beginning to seek desire is the first.
