Where is one born? Like a scale, one dies high and low, and connects (to the next life's) continuum. Beings in the intermediate state generate attachment to the place of rebirth, and other afflictions become contributing factors. The intermediate state accompanied by attachment ceases, and a consciousness with the ability to discern, like curd, arises; this is the result of maturation. After that, as the law of dependent origination states, the foundations of the four modes of birth—oviparous, viviparous, moisture-born, and metamorphic—manifest. The phrase "as the law of dependent origination states" refers to the gradual arising of name and form, etc. As stated in the scriptures: "Initially, it becomes like curd; from curd, it becomes soft flesh; from soft flesh, it becomes firm flesh; from firm flesh, it becomes hard flesh; from hard flesh, limbs arise; hair, body hair, nails, etc., also appear; the tangible faculties and characteristics gradually manifest." It's like that. The discernment of the truth of suffering ends here. What is the truth of origin? It is afflictions and the actions arising from afflictions. The truth of origin refers to where all suffering arises from. What is that? It refers to afflictions and the actions arising from afflictions, which are the so-called contaminated dharmas. If that is the case, why did the Blessed One only explain craving when elucidating the truth of origin? Because it is the chief that pervades all (sentient beings). The Blessed One mainly elucidated the truth of origin by explaining the craving that has the nature of arising, is accompanied by joyful attachment, and the delight in its manifestation. What is the meaning of "chief"? It refers to the meaning of pervading all. What is the meaning of pervading all? Like this, desire pervades all things. How does desire pervade all things? Because it pervades all things of body and situation, both obtained and not obtained. For the body that has been obtained, it is craving; for the body that has not been obtained, it is rebirth; for the situations that have been obtained, it is attachment accompanied by joy; for the situations that have not been obtained, it is
