The term for that. Sound is the nature, benefit and harm, detailed distinction by cause, detailed distinction by explanation, and the establishment of detailed distinction of the place of terms. The nature is the meaning apprehended by the ear faculty. The detailed distinction of explanation is the three kinds such as those understood by worldly people. The rest should be understood as they are in accordance with reality. Among them, that which arises from the cause of the grasped great elements is, for example, the sound of speech and so on. That which arises from the cause of the ungrasped great elements is, for example, the sound of trees and so on. Both of those are, for example, the sound of hands and clay drums and so on. That which is understood by worldly people is that which is included in the language of worldly people. That which is shown by the accomplished ones is that which is shown by the noble ones. That which is completely imputed is that which is shown by the non-Buddhists. The term of the noble or the term of the non-noble should be understood as being made in terms of the eight terms such as seeing. What is smell? What is the meaning apprehended by the nose faculty that is closely taken by the four great elements? Is the smell pleasant, or is the smell unpleasant, or is the smell neutral, or is it innate, or is it mixed, or is it transformed? Smell is the establishment of nature, benefit and harm, and detailed distinctions. Innate smells are sandalwood and so on. Mixed smells are mixed incense and so on. Transformed smells are ripening fruits and so on. What is taste? What is the meaning apprehended by the tongue faculty that is closely taken by the four great elements? That is also bitter, or sour, or hot, or astringent, or salty, or sweet, or pleasant, or unpleasant, or liberated from both of those, or innate, or mixed, or transformed. What is one aspect of what should be done? It is the establishment of universal measurement, universal assessment, touching, universal harm, gathering, and whether the elements are balanced or not. When water and wind gather, it is cold. When water and earth gather, it congeals. When the elements are balanced, inner things and so on increase in strength and magnitude, and magnitude should be known as fearlessness. Satisfaction is both. The remaining things such as hunger should be known as unbalanced elements. What is the nature of the birth place of Dharma? It should be viewed as five types: manifestly assembled, or manifestly bright, or correctly taken, or completely examined, or independent. Manifestly assembled is the form of minute particles. Manifestly bright is that which is separate from the touch that obstructs it, other than that. Correctly taken is non-revealing form. Completely examined is the form of an image. Independent is the form of the object of meditation for those who meditate on liberation. What is the establishment of the aggregate of feeling? It is the six groups of feelings, that is, the pleasure of feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the eye, or suffering, or neither suffering nor pleasure. The pleasure of feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, or suffering, or neither suffering nor pleasure, pleasure is felt by the body, or suffering is felt by the body, or neither suffering nor pleasure is felt by the body, pleasure is felt by the mind, or suffering is felt by the mind, or neither suffering nor pleasure is felt by the mind, pleasure is poisonous, or suffering or neither suffering nor pleasure is poisonous, pleasure is non-poisonous, or suffering, or neither suffering nor pleasure is non-poisonous, pleasure is dependent on attachment, or suffering, or neither suffering nor pleasure is dependent on attachment, pleasure is dependent on manifest arising, or suffering, or neither suffering nor pleasure can be dependent on manifest arising.
