and also antidote, and near pacification, and conformity, should also be regarded as virtuous. Aggregates, and the ten realms, and one aspect of the four sources of birth. Among these, the ten realms are: the realms of consciousness, and the realms of form, sound, and dharma. The four sources of birth are: the sources of birth of form, sound, mind, and dharma. This is to abandon the manifest clinging to possessing self and dharma. What is virtue by its own nature? The eleven mental factors such as faith. What is virtue by association? The dharmas that are similar to and endowed with faith and so on. What is virtue by subsequent association? It is the imprints of those very things. What is virtue by instigation? It is the actions of body and speech instigated by all of those. What is virtue in the ultimate sense? It is suchness. What is virtue obtained by birth? It is that these very virtuous dharmas, relying on having been accustomed to them in the past, the fully ripened result of their nature is manifestly accomplished, and from those very things, desire dwells completely without being separately examined by nature. The meaning of "those very things" is faith and so on. The meaning of "without being separately examined by nature" is that it is not by one's own power, but by the power of virtuous friends and so on. The meaning of "desire dwells completely" is that it is not merely the desire obtained by birth, but together with the first and so on. What is virtue by application? It is cultivating virtue by relying on a noble person, and listening to the sacred Dharma, and properly directing the mind, and relying on practicing the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma. The meaning of "cultivating virtue" is that all hearing and so on should be recognized as virtuous dharmas. What is virtue by making it present? Whether it is the Tathagata, or a stupa, or a statue, or a painting, or making it present, or the Dharma or the seven volumes of the root text of the Dharma, and performing the work of offering. What is virtue by benefiting? It is benefiting sentient beings with the four objects of gathering. What is virtue by completely grasping? It is completely grasping the object of merit arising from giving, or grasping birth in higher realms arising from ethics, or wealth.

Or completely upholding birth in a noble lineage, or completely upholding conformity with pure Dharma. Upholding birth in the heavens and wealthy families, these two indicate the cause of higher rebirth. Upholding conformity with pure Dharma indicates the cause of attaining Nirvana. What is virtue through antidotes? That is, what antidote completely refutes, as well as the antidote of abandonment, the antidote of the base, the antidote of prolongation, the antidote of complete suppression, the antidote of separation, the antidote of afflictive obscurations, and the antidote of cognitive obscurations. These antidotes of complete refutation and so on will be explained later. What is virtue through near peace? That is, abandoning all desire, abandoning all hatred, abandoning all delusion, abandoning all afflictions, as well as the cessation of perception and feeling, the realm of Nirvana with remainder, the realm of Nirvana without remainder, and non-abiding Nirvana. What is virtue through concordant cause? By the power of attaining near peace, the special qualities of worldly and transmundane superknowledges and so on, as well as common and uncommon qualities. How is it non-virtuous? What is non-virtuous? Why is it considered non-virtuous? By nature, relation, subsequent relation, arising, ultimate truth, innate, combination, to be done, harm, upholding, unfavorable factors, and complete severance, one should also examine what is non-virtuous. Aggregates, as well as the ten realms, one aspect of the four sources of birth. In order to abandon the clinging to appearances that are associated with what is not self or Dharma. What is non-virtuous by nature? That which is associated with mind, and other than the afflictions that operate in the form and formless realms, other afflictions, near afflictions, and that which gives rise to all misconduct. That is, whatever is not self-born that operates in the desire realm, and whatever gives rise to all misconduct from the self-born, that is non-virtuous. Other than that, it is obscured.
