Therefore. For example, it is said based on the distinction of aggregates and the distinction of elements. What is the number of aggregates, is that also the element? What is the number of elements, is that also the number of aggregates? This is called the two extremes. There is a number of aggregates, but not a number of elements, namely the form aggregate and the consciousness aggregate. Like this, all characteristics of the form aggregate, or all characteristics of the consciousness aggregate, have not become one element. There is a number of elements, but not a number of aggregates, namely the dharma element. The third extreme is where only the three extremes are shown. For example, what is the number of aggregates, is that also the number of sense fields? This is called the three extremes. There is a number of aggregates, but not a number of sense fields, namely the form aggregate. There is a number of sense fields, but not a number of aggregates, namely the dharma sense field. There is a number that is both the number of aggregates and the number of sense fields, namely the consciousness aggregate and the mind sense field. There is no number that is neither an aggregate nor a sense field. The four extremes are where four situations are shown. Possessing the eye faculty, is it? Possessing the ear faculty, possessing the eye faculty, is it? This is called the four extremes. The first extreme is that the eye is born and not decayed, but is deaf. The second extreme is that the ear is born and not decayed, but is blind. The third extreme is that both the eye and the ear are born and not decayed. The fourth extreme is other than those situations. "It is so" means that when asked a question, one answers "It is so." "It is so" is a synonym for acceptance. For example, if asked, are all that are impermanent conditioned? Are all that are conditioned impermanent? One should answer, "It is so." Abandoning means abandoning with "is not." For example, if someone asks, which truths encompass the conditioned things other than the aggregates? One should answer, there are no conditioned things other than the aggregates, thus abandoning. What is the definitive correct question? There are eight types, namely the definitive correct question expressed with "what," such as, who

These non-observations, whatever they may be, past, future, present, internal, external, coarse, subtle, bad, good, distant, near, should be viewed in the order of these. Just as it is said, so it should be with what is said, that is, what is not observed, and by what and what, for what, from what and what, where it is not observed, and how much is not observed. Furthermore, there are four methods of determination, namely, refuting and so on. Refuting, establishing, cutting off, and comprehending. Among these, refuting is distinguishing and saying, "This is not good," when others speak of faults. Establishing is saying, "This is good," when one speaks well of one's own side. Cutting off is making a definite distinction for others who have or have not arisen with doubt. Comprehending is showing the meaning of that thing to those who are confused about that thing.
