Because they abide in holding their own views as supreme, and because they cling to the literal meaning of words. One should not study the definitive meaning of the sutras, because one abides in holding one's own views as supreme. One will cling to the literal meaning of words. For example, from the statement "all phenomena are without inherent existence," one slanders the real existence of all characteristics. Similarly, for others as well, clinging to the literal meaning of words, one should also know that the Mahayana will not truly arise, because the Mahayana is taught with various intentions. Considering this, the Blessed One said in the Dharma category of the Great Mirror of Dharma: "Bodhisattvas who cling to the literal meaning of words and do not properly distinguish phenomena will give rise to twenty-eight evil views. What are these twenty-eight evil views? The view of clinging to characteristics, the view of slandering analysis, the view of slandering imputation, the view of slandering only this, the view of grasping, the view of transforming, the view of seeing no fault, the view of seeing certainty, the view of contempt, the view of contempt, the view of extreme confusion, the view of perversion, the view of increase, the view of non-acceptance, the view of evil flattery, the view of reverence and the view of ignorance, the fundamental view, the view of seeing non-views as views, the view of severing connections, the view of seeing certainty, the view of obscurations, etc., the view of increasing non-virtue, the view of no fruit, the view of cutting off with annihilation, the view of slander, the view of non-reality, the great view, and the view of manifest pride." Among these, for the Mahayana, clinging to the words "all phenomena are without inherent existence," and "unborn" and "unceased," etc., those who are not skilled in understanding their intention, develop faith in the literal meaning of these words, thinking that this is what the Blessed One taught, and thus cling to the characteristic that all phenomena are unborn and non-existent, etc., this is their view of clinging to characteristics. They themselves cling to the characteristics of non-existence, etc.

From the nature of the completely imputed, to the dependent, and the completely established nature, there are three kinds of slandering. Among them, this is the nature of the completely imputed: from what is called "form" to what is called "nirvana," it is merely an imputation in speech, not truly existent; those who are given the meaning of bodilessness, clinging to form and so on as characteristics, engage in false discrimination. Among them, this is the nature of the dependent: it is that very false discrimination that is not true. Among them, this is the nature of the completely established: it is the suchness, the thusness, of all phenomena. Therefore, the view of slandering has three forms: the view of slandering imputation, the view of slandering false discrimination, and the view of slandering suchness. Thus, for all these, when slandering all phenomena in various ways, the view of slandering, that is, completely holding onto certain reasonings for the sake of others, and those definitive meaning sutras that proclaim the inexpressible nature of phenomena, also conforming to one's own view and completely changing them, those people's views are of two kinds: the view of holding and the view of changing. Those people also become such views, that is, relying on such views, whether practicing virtue or non-virtue, it becomes without fault and without defect, and all of that becomes virtuous, and believing that it arises from previously accumulated practice, like that, those people's views are of two kinds: the view of regarding as without fault and the view of regarding as necessarily arising. Those people, due to clinging to such views, turn away from those views, separately establishing the aggregates and other phenomena, disparaging the Hearers' Vinaya, and disbelieving those who are regarded as slanderers, these two views of extremely hating the pure vehicle of the Hearers: the view of contempt and the view of extreme anger. Following one's own view, thinking that emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness are truly pure as they are, but perceiving as its characteristic what is not its characteristic, this is the inverted establishment of those characteristics.
