From the time of existence, the dharmas that abide in the nature of self and generality are known as dharmata. For example, fire burns, water rots, and so on, these are known as the dharmata of all dharmas. As it is said, the rich eye is empty from permanence to self. Why is that? Because (Buddha) said, this is its nature. What is the thorough search for those who strive to examine the Dharma with reason? There are four kinds of thorough search: name thorough search, object thorough search, nature designation thorough search, and difference designation thorough search. What is name thorough search? That is, by what one realizes that the collection of names, the collection of words, and the collection of explications all have no self-nature accomplished. Because the collection of names and so on exists, therefore, one contemplates that these have no self-nature accomplished. What is object thorough search? That is, by what one realizes that the characteristics of the aggregates, elements, and sources are all without self-nature accomplished. Just as the collection of names and so on are spoken of, so one realizes that the characteristics of the aggregates and so on are without self-nature accomplished, which is a synonym for complete realization. What is nature designation thorough search? That is, in the relationship between speech and what is to be spoken, one realizes that it is only the cause of the designation of nature that is considered real. The relationship between speech and what is to be spoken is the cause of mutual understanding. Thus, one who is proficient in terminology, merely by obtaining speech, arises with the understanding of what is to be spoken through memory. If one focuses on what is to be spoken, one also arises with the understanding of its speech. Thus, in such a relationship, that is spoken of as merely designated as the self-nature of the eye and so on. Whatever piece of meat and so on becomes the cause of terminology, that is a thorough search, and that is called nature designation thorough search. What is difference designation thorough search? That is, in the relationship between speech and what is to be spoken, one realizes that it is only the cause of the designation of difference that is considered real. What, in those four, is the relationship between speech and what is to be spoken, permanent and impermanent, superior and non-superior.

And, form and formless, manifest and unmanifest, merely establishing as the nature of difference, it is considered as the cause of designation. What is it to fully know as it is, diligently seeking all dharmas? There are four kinds of fully knowing as it is: namely, arising from seeking names, fully knowing as it is; arising from seeking things; arising from seeking self-nature; arising from seeking to establish differences, fully knowing as it is. What is it to arise from seeking names, fully knowing as it is? It is knowing that names are unattainable. What is it to arise from seeking things, fully knowing as it is? Similarly, knowing that the nature of things is unattainable. What is it to arise from seeking to establish self-nature, fully knowing as it is? Knowing that self-nature is not real. What is it to arise from seeking to establish differences, how is it to fully know according to the correct view? Knowing that differences are not real. These four kinds of pervasive seeking are all about knowing that names and so on are unattainable. For a yogi who diligently practices samadhi in dharmas, five aspects should be observed: namely, ground, arising, like a mirror, appearance, and place. What is the ground? It starts from the truth of accumulating merit, which is extensive learning. Among them, the ground refers to how extensive learning is apprehended, becoming the place of tranquility and insight, which is called the "ground." What is arising? It is properly attending to what is apprehended. Therefore, for extensive learning, the mind is held in a non-inverted way, in the form of meaningful thought. What is like a mirror? It is the samadhi that apprehends it, with characteristics. That is, the samadhi that apprehends extensive learning itself, with characteristics, is an image similar to the object of knowledge, which is the so-called term. The mirror-like nature here should be understood as fully knowing the image of the object of knowledge. What is appearance? It is knowing that what is grasped and what grasps are unattainable. Because it is happening manifestly, it is gathered by the path that has not been attained.

Therefore, the Blessed One said: When a Bodhisattva enters into samadhi, seeing the image of the mind, from then on, transforms the perception of the object, firmly grasping one's own perception. Thus, the mind abides within, realizing non-grasping. Below that, non-grasping is non-holding, thereby realizing the absence of characteristics. Thus it is said. How then does a Bodhisattva yogi, through diligence in this, touch the absence of characteristics? Bodhisattvas who have accumulated the accumulations of merit and wisdom, after countless eons have been completed, properly attend to the attainment corresponding to the realization of suchness, and cultivate samadhi. Thus, the mind in such samadhi, relying on the image of what is to be known, engages in meditation. Because seeing that the mind in samadhi and the image are not other, therefore transforms the perception of the object of the image, merely clinging to its form as one's own perception. At this time, because only one's own mind abides, therefore abiding in sentient beings, thereby fully knowing that in all aspects there is no grasping. Below that, because there is no grasping, the grasping is also not fully established, therefore also knowing that it does not exist. Below that, individually separating from the clinging to the nature of both, thereby comprehending the absence of characteristics. What place is the place of abiding? It is the place of transformation. The place that is free from bad destinies is a synonym for the place called completely pure. This Yogachara Bhumi, it should be known, is to show the cause and the effect. Among them, the four beginning with the four are showing the cause. The last one is showing the effect. How is one skilled in the Dharma? How is one skilled in the meaning? How is one skilled in the letters? How is one skilled in the definitive words? How is one skilled in the intention of the prior and subsequent limits? These five questions should be understood by following the words of the sutras.
