By cause and effect pervading all directions, it can be regarded as a nearby place. Non-form does not have the power to pervade all directions, therefore cause and effect should be understood as being summarized here as form. The so-called counting of individual distinct things is because, for a single nature that is not distinct, numbers such as two and three are unreasonable. The various conditions of cause and effect gather together, like this: the conditions for the fruit of the cause called "consciousness" are that the senses are not impaired, the object appears, and the attention that produces it abides nearby. Similarly, it should be understood as applying to other situations as well. Therefore, these non-mind-related compositional dharmas, because they are applied to various states, should all be understood as nominally existent. Among them, the state of increase of virtue and so on, as well as obscuration, is one. The state where mind and mental factors do not arise is three. The state of abiding is one. The state of similarity is one. The state of characteristics is four. The state of designation is three. The state of not being obtained is one. The state of cause and effect is the remainder. Cause and effect should be understood as existing in all conditioned phenomena; that from which other things arise is the cause, and that from which other things arise is the effect. When the aggregates and so on are fully produced, the complete growth of their seeds is called habit. The so-called all seeds are because the aggregates and so on themselves possess the seeds that produce them. There, dharmas gather as seeds, or because of clinging to self, they gather as sentient beings, therefore it is the ālaya-vijñāna. Because it is necessarily produced from previous karma, it is the vipāka-vijñāna. Because it connects again and again, it is the grasping consciousness. It is also called ground, because it accumulates the habits of dharmas. How is it known that the ālaya-vijñāna exists? If it did not exist, then grasping, endurance, clarity, seeds, actions, bodily sensations, mindless samādhi, and death would not occur. This is the analysis of the summary verse:

Thus, the determination has been made. It should be understood that the ālaya-vijñāna exists in eight ways. If there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then it is impossible to have the taking up of a body, impossible to have the initial arising, impossible to have manifestation, impossible to have seeds, impossible to have karma, impossible to have the experience of the body, impossible to have mindless samādhi, and impossible to have the death and transference of consciousness. Why is the taking up of a body not possible? It is said: in five ways. Thus, the ālaya-vijñāna arises from the cause of previous actions. The entering consciousnesses, such as the eye, arise from the cause of present conditions. As it is said: "Due to the power of the senses, objects, and attention, the consciousnesses arise." As it is widely spoken. This is the first reason. Also, the six aggregates of consciousness are focused on virtue and non-virtue. This is the second reason. Also, in the six aggregates of consciousness, there is no aspect of what is not taught but is included in the maturation of karma. This is the third reason. Also, the arising of the six aggregates of consciousness is definite in each location. From whatever location whatever consciousness arises, that is what is taken by it, and the rest is not taken, so it is not reasonable. It should also not be taken, because there is no consciousness. This is the fourth reason. Also, there will be the fault of taking a body again and again. Thus, the eye consciousness sometimes arises and sometimes does not arise. The rest are the same. This is the fifth reason. Thus, it is not reasonable because it arises from the cause of previous karma and present actions, and because it is virtuous and non-virtuous, and because its aspect is not attainable, and because it is definite in each location, and because it takes a body again and again. Why is it that the initial entry cannot arise? If someone says: If there is ālaya-vijñāna, then two consciousnesses will arise simultaneously. If it is said like that, then it should be answered like this
