Explanation of the Compendium of Dharma Treasury Son of the Victorious One. Explanation of the Compendium of Dharma Treasury Son of the Victorious One. In Sanskrit: Abhidharma Sarva Ducchaya Bhashum. In Tibetan: Explanation of the Compendium of Dharma Treasury, Volume One. Homage to Manjushri, the youthful one! Why was this treatise composed? Starting with the aggregates and so on, it was composed in order to become proficient in the places of contemplation such as "how" and "why." Thus, this wise one obtains two benefits: the benefit of attention and the benefit of settling beneficial speech. Among these, the benefit of attention should be understood as being in accordance with calm abiding and in accordance with the increase of insight. Being in accordance with calm abiding means that having become proficient in these places, without doubt, in order to peacefully and equally settle the mind in one's own object with a one-pointed manner, it is in accordance with calm abiding. Being in accordance with the increase of insight means that by thoroughly examining the knowable in many ways, in order for wisdom to go into excellence, it is in accordance with insight. The benefit of settling beneficial speech means that by being proficient in these places, having the power to answer all questions, it should be seen as obtaining fearlessness. In order to express the five bases of self, four of these are the bases of self, therefore they are the bases of self. The fifth is only the characteristic of self, being a base, it should be understood as the base of self. By mentioning the body together with complete grasping, the aggregate of form, both outer and inner, is summarized. Feeling and so on are enjoyment and so on, and their characteristics will be explained when they are taught. Their place is the basis of self, which is knowing. The place of those, such as the body together with complete grasping, is the characteristic of self, which is the meaning of the word "base." Thus, in the world, most people grasp the aggregate of consciousness as self, and the rest as belonging to self. "The body together with complete grasping" and so on, are the six faculties such as the eye, and the six objects such as form. The six types of past and present close experiences are the six consciousnesses.

Suppose, holding it is to hold with the initial of place and object. The twelve sources (of cognition) are realms because they hold it in that way. The various consciousnesses are to be understood as realms themselves because they hold the characteristic of closely experiencing. Because it is merely the door of birth, only the faculties and objects are mentioned, therefore it is established as only the twelve sources. The six consciousnesses, which are the characteristic of closely experiencing, are not established. Close clinging is desire and attachment, wherein desire is longing. Attachment is excessive clinging. Desire takes hold by way of desiring the future body, thereby accomplishing the future aggregates. Attachment takes hold by way of excessively clinging to the present body, thereby completely not abandoning the present aggregates. Therefore, both of these are called close clinging. Among them, what is said to be explained like the aggregates is that which possesses close clinging, therefore it should be understood as the dharmas together with close clinging. By contact being existent as form, it should be understood as transforming into something else. What is said to be "in the object" refers to the side that has become manifest. What is said to be "this and this" refers to the image similar to things such as skeletons. What is said to be "this kind of thing and this kind of thing" refers to the distinctions of color and shape. What is said to be "holding clearly" is to understand in that way. The ripened result of virtuous actions is experiencing happiness. The ripened result of non-virtuous actions is experiencing suffering. The ripened result of both is experiencing neither suffering nor happiness. Like this, the ripened results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, the alaya-consciousness is always inseparably associated with equanimity, and that equanimity itself is the ripened result. Happiness and suffering, because they arise from the ripened result, are therefore designated as the ripened result. Regarding the meanings of seeing, hearing, distinguishing, and knowing, seeing is what is experienced by the eye. Hearing is what is experienced by the ear. Distinguishing is "it will become this and this kind of thing," which is what is manifestly examined by oneself.
