Holding without error is to hold well and firmly. Because one knows the exact words and letters, and understands the manifest attachment to the exact words of the local language such as "I am," thereby subsequently applying names. Being skilled in understanding the meaning of the prior and subsequent limits, if one practices completely, one abides in the Dharma, knowing what actions will cause future results, because one understands the meaning, comprehends it, and takes its essence. In the chapter called "Bhikkhu Abiding in the Dharma," the Blessed One taught that hearing, thinking, and meditating, if practiced completely, constitute abiding in the Dharma, and not merely by any single action. Among these, fully comprehending, reciting, speaking much, and thinking much are merely entering into hearing and thinking, but not entering into meditation, because yoga and the like are abandoned. Therefore, it is established as not abiding in the Dharma. If someone does not rely on hearing and thinking, but only enters into meditation, that too is established as not abiding in the Dharma. Therefore, the Blessed One, starting with the bhikkhu abiding in the Dharma, in order to make people understand how to rely on hearing, thinking, and meditating, and abide in both, thus becoming one who abides in the Dharma, extensively proclaimed, "The bhikkhu fully comprehends all the Dharmas of the Sutra Pitaka and the Vinaya Pitaka expressed in song," and thereafter said, "Do not abandon yoga," and so on. Through "Do not abandon yoga," and so on, it is shown that combining with samadhi and not being content arises from meditation. Combining with samadhi is of two types: continuously entering and respectfully combining, which is indicated by "Do not abandon yoga." Combining in a non-inverted way is indicated by "Do not abandon mindfulness." Not being content is indicated by "Do not abandon making the mind abide peacefully within," that is, not tasting its flavor, and observing where one combines with peaceful abiding in a non-abandoning way. Why is it called the Bodhisattva Paramita Pitaka, which is more extensive than other Sutra Pitakas? Because there,

It is to explain from the enumeration of the perfections to the determination of each one. There are two kinds of numbers: countable numbers and just that number. The so-called "six perfections" is a countable number. The path of the Bodhisattva is completely endowed with all kinds of excellence and definite goodness, summarized by two threes, so it is the six perfections. Not many, not few, is just that number. Excellence has three aspects: great enjoyment, great self, and vast aspects. Among them, generosity can obtain great enjoyment, so the result of the perfection of generosity is great enjoyment. Among them, discipline can obtain a complete body of good rebirth, so the result of the perfection of discipline is a great self. Patience can obtain the approach of all beings, so the result of the perfection of patience is a vast aspect. The path of definite goodness also has three aspects: the method of subduing afflictions and combining with virtuous dharmas, the method of maturing sentient beings, and the method of truly accomplishing the Buddha's Dharma. If any of these are missing, the definite goodness of the Bodhisattva will not arise. Among them, the method of maturing sentient beings is the perfection of meditation. Relying on it, sentient beings are matured through supernormal powers. In addition, as a method of non-abiding nirvana, it is the six perfections. The Bodhisattva returns from abiding in nirvana, and must fully accept excellence in samsara, and return from abiding in samsara, so that there will be no afflictions there. Therefore, the three are the methods of obtaining excellence, and the three are the methods of not having afflictions there, which should be understood in order in the previous way. On the method of completely without afflictions, diligence is to practice the antidote, meditation is to subdue afflictions, and wisdom is to completely destroy the latent tendencies.

Furthermore, there are other classifications for the purpose of subduing sentient beings and counteracting afflictions. Among them, generosity is how the Bodhisattva subdues sentient beings by benefiting them with the means to accomplish their needs. Discipline is how they subdue by not causing harm or various kinds of injury, in order, by not creating harm to enjoyment, body, and mind. Patience is how they subdue by not minding poverty and harm, because they do not get angry at others' harm to my enjoyment, etc. These three are for subduing. Diligence is directing the mind towards the side of virtue, even if afflictions are not completely suppressed. Meditation is completely suppressing afflictions. Wisdom is thoroughly destroying latent tendencies. These three should be understood as counteracting afflictions. So, what are the characteristics of the Bodhisattva's perfections? The perfection of generosity refers to a Bodhisattva abiding in the nature of a Bodhisattva, relying on the mind of enlightenment, with a mind preceded by compassion, completely giving away all possessions, which is the activity of body, speech, and mind. By doing so, the characteristics of the perfection of generosity should be understood as being shown by lineage, aspiration, intention, object, and essence. For example, the nature of a Bodhisattva is lineage, the mind of enlightenment is aspiration, the mind preceding compassion is intention, completely giving away all possessions is the object, and the activity of body, speech, and mind is the essence. Similarly, the perfection of wisdom, etc., should also be widely understood. This is the distinction: for the perfections of discipline, patience, and diligence, one should say in order that the activity of body, speech, and mind is to completely take all vows, follow and protect them, not cause harm, not mind suffering, gladly accept it, and perfectly accomplish all virtuous dharmas. For the perfection of meditation, one should say all aspects and mastery of the activity of body, speech, and mind.
