That is, strive on both. How to strive? Through the gate of hearing and holding, strive on higher insight. By preceding it, strive on calm abiding. The fourth is the attainment of both. The faculty of making all the unknown known is that which is collected in accordance with the part of ascertainment of the path of joining, and which faculty is among the fifteen moments of mind of the path of seeing? For example, the faculty of mind and the five faculties such as faith, and that which is without superiority, etc., according to the difference of place, how they are in accordance, any one of the faculties of pleasure, displeasure, and equanimity. The faculty of displeasure, at the time of joining, after that which is in accordance with the part of ascertainment, it should be understood as collected by the desire for supreme liberation. These are ten faculties because of existence. Just because of entering in order to make all the previously unknown known, it is called the faculty of making all the unknown known. These ten faculties themselves, from the sixteenth moment of mind of the path of seeing until that which is called the vajra-like samadhi, are called the faculty of all-knowing on that path of learning, because there is no previously unseen object of knowledge. Before realizing the faculty of displeasure, those nine faculties themselves, on the path of no more learning, are called the faculty of possessing all-knowing, because possessing all-knowing is the faculty of an arhat. In the stage of the path of meditation, this should also be said, when meditating on the path of the upper ground manifesting, the roots of virtue of the lower ground that have not yet manifested will also be meditated, because of obtaining mastery over them. Mastery is obtaining supreme familiarity, manifestation should be understood as mastery. The ultimate path is the complete cessation of all bad migrations, which appears extensively, among which all bad migrations are twenty-four, for example, the bad migration of expression is pervasive, that is, the habit of manifestly clinging to the names of all phenomena such as the eye, etc., residing on the alaya consciousness, following from beginningless time, from which the eye, etc.

Those who have a manifest attachment to the name of the Dharma, etc., occur again and again, and that is called the habit of proliferation. The fault of feeling is the habit of feelings with defilements. The fault of afflictions is the latent afflictions. The fault of karma is the habit of karmas with defilements. The fault of maturation is the inability of the body of maturation. The fault of the obscuration of afflictions is that afflictions are unbearable and long-lasting. The fault of the obscuration of karma is the obscuration of karma itself, such as the uninterrupted karma that obstructs the path. The fault of the obscuration of maturation is obtaining a body that is incompatible with the realization of the truth, such as the body of sentient beings in hell. The fault of obscuration is that which obstructs engagement in virtuous things, and is overwhelmed by desire for desirable things, etc. The fault of thought is that which hinders renunciation, and is overwhelmed by various thoughts about desirable things, etc. The fault of food is that eating too little or too much makes one unsuitable for practice. The fault of sexual intercourse is that which arises from the union of two, and harms the body and mind. The fault of dreams is the exhaustion of body and mind that arises from sleep. The fault of illness is the extreme discomfort that arises from the imbalance of the elements. The fault of aging is the helplessness that arises from becoming. The fault of death is the confusion of all the senses at the time of death. The fault of complete exhaustion is the fatigue of the body that arises from walking too much. The faults shown are the faults of manifest speech, etc., and like these, combine them according to their respective compatibility, and they are all of the nature of not transcending suffering. The great, medium, and small faults should be understood as the practices in the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, respectively. The fault of the obscuration of afflictions is the unfavorable aspect of the enlightenment of hearers and solitary realizers. The fault of the obscuration of absorption is the absorption of the final abiding.
