The term "Nava-sadhapo" means to produce initially. If one has already been born, then among humans, one is born in that very life or in the realm of form and manifests. Noble Hearers have abandoned desire for the realm of form, having attained the formless realm, how are they born in the realm of form? Those who have abandoned desire for the realm of form are not necessarily absorbed in the samadhi of the formless realm. Therefore, all who have abandoned desire for form enter into the samadhi of the peaceful liberation of the formless realm; and are all those who enter into the samadhi of the peaceful liberation of the formless realm free from desire for form? There are four possibilities, depending on what is insurmountable; being free from desire for form is the first possibility. A noble one who has attained the fourth dhyana, not seeking birth in the formless realm, clears the path of abandonment, abides in a special path, and enters into the samadhi of the peaceful liberation of the formless realm, is the second possibility. That same one seeks to be free from desire, abides in the path of abandonment, and enters into the samadhi of the peaceful liberation of the formless realm, is the third possibility. Apart from these situations, it is the fourth possibility. Why do those born in the formless realm not manifest? Because they abide in peace, the noble ones who wish to abide accomplish those things among humans and cause them to manifest. Those who are born in the formless realm do not need to strive, because they abide in the supremely peaceful liberation arising from maturation, therefore they also do not make effort to make it manifest. Each of the small, medium, and great paths is divided into three types by smallness and so on, and thus they are classified into nine types, in order to show that what is to be abandoned by cultivation is abandoned gradually. Why does the smallest of the small paths abandon the greatest of the great afflictions? Because it arises pervasively in the mind-stream that is utterly devoid of shame and embarrassment and is without hesitation, it is easy to realize and easy to completely cut off. Therefore, it is eliminated by a small antidote, like a large stain. Whatever is completely cut off

The subtle afflictions that are difficult to arise at all times and places, subtle and clinging to the continuum, are eliminated by the power of great antidotes, just like tiny dust. Therefore, it should be known that one should reverse from the aspect of the unfavorable side and establish oneself in the aspect of the favorable side. The path of application refers to the gradual transformation of the state through the cultivation of any path, as it separates from the various aspects of afflictions such as the great among the great, and each part of the unfortunate realms of existence. This is called the path of application in the path of cultivation. Below that, since it is free from the various aspects of afflictions and all the unfortunate realms of existence, it transforms the state into one without unfortunate realms, which is the path of no interruption. The path of liberation refers to what transforms the state, which is experienced individually by oneself. The path of distinction refers to the path of application, the path of no interruption, and the path of liberation, which eliminate the remaining afflictions. Alternatively, the path of distinction refers to abandoning the application of counteracting afflictions, or contemplating the Dharma such as the Sutras, or thinking timidly, or abiding in the Dharma that has been understood, observing each separately; or abiding in other samadhis, the other samadhis are the path of samadhi. Furthermore, manifesting special qualities such as clairvoyance, or the path of abiding in those qualities. Having extensively explained the path of cultivation in this way, the cultivation of the path that follows is then discussed. There are four types of path cultivation, which are in terms of correct abandonment, and how they should be combined accordingly. Among them, cultivating for the sake of attainment refers to cultivating for the meaning of attainment, thereby enabling the attainment of virtuous Dharmas that have not been attained. Cultivating reliance refers to cultivating reliance itself, thereby enabling the virtuous Dharmas that have been attained to become familiar. Cultivating for the sake of elimination refers to cultivating for the meaning of elimination, thereby enabling the elimination of non-virtuous Dharmas at the time of arising. Cultivating antidotes refers to cultivating antidotes, thereby enabling future non-virtuous Dharmas to become non-arising Dharmas. Another way of saying it is that when the noble path arises, it establishes its own imprints, which is the attainment of imprints.
